We are going to be using a new, web-based system called Calibrated Peer Review (CPR) to help you develop your writing skills in ME 120. Your first assignment using CPR will be to get familiar with it. Here is what you need to do: • Read the Overview for CPR included below • Go to the ME 120 website and follow the link entitled, ‘CPR Stuff’ • Follow the link for your section • Get the CPR userid corresponding to the last 4 digits of your SJSU ID number • Read the student handout located at: http://cpr.molsci.ucla.edu/cpr/resources/documents/misc/Student_Handout.pdf and/or follow the guide for New Users below to find out how to get started using CPR • Go to the CPR website at: http://cpr.molsci.ucla.edu/cpr/cpr_info/ • Log in to CPR • Take the Tour and pretest • Go to the assignment for your section (Measurement and Significant Figures) and complete the Text Entry Stage. (Note: you have one week to do this. Next week you will finish the last two stages.) 2. Problems 3.1 and 4.1 in the LabView book. It has been thoroughly tested in courses nationwide. CPR has each learner answer guiding questions for a topic, enter an essay based on guiding questions, evaluate with a scoring rubric three instructor-versions of the essay (exemplary, intermediate, and poor quality), evaluate anonymously the essays for three peers, and evaluate his/her own essay to conclude the process. Three peers, in turn, evaluate the learner's essay. The learner earns one score for each of the following four modes of evaluation. 1. evaluating the quality of the instructor's calibrations (versions of different quality); 2. evaluating the essays of peers; 3. writing a quality essay; and 4. accurately evaluating his/her own essay. CPR gives learners who are not yet able to accurately judge the quality of written work a much lower weight for peer review compared to the more competent reviewers. This eliminates erroneously high scores typically given by those lacking confidence in ability to judge. CPR builds such confidence as learners progress through a number of assignments. Learners may use any computer with internet access. Also, they may access any internet link the instructor deems relevant for the assignment (e.g., guiding questions, writing prompts for the essay, problemsolving scenarios/ simulations, literature and on-line resources, etc.). Assignment Structure – Students MUST complete ALL of the following stages for each assignment. Connect to the CPR login page: http://cpr.molsci.ucla.edu/cpr/cpr/login.asp 2. CLICK “New Users: first time logging in?” 3. SELECT ‘San Jose State University’ in the pull down menu 4. ENTER your Social Security Number without dashes in the window “Enter Your Institution ID,” and CLICK ‘Next.’ This Web site is fully secure, as it must ensure that essays submitted by users cannot be accessed by ‘hackers.’ 5. ENTER a Password (you make this up according to the instructions). Also enter a challenge question and answer. This challenge question will be used if you forget your login information. 6. This will give you a unique CPR ID. Write it down. You will need it every time you login to CPR. 7. Completing the tour of CPR and its quiz will allow you to login to CPR for your first assignment. 8. To login, ENTER your CPR ID in the Username window, then your Password, and CLICK ‘Submit.’ Tips To retain your work despite loss of Internet connections or other problems, try the following: • Avoid writing essays on-line. Type all essays in a text file (Microsoft Word, Notepad, etc.). Save this file on the desktop or floppy disk. To enter the essay in CPR, simply Copy the text and Paste it into the CPR text entry box. • If you already have entered in CPR an essay you would like to edit later, Copy and Paste it to a text file on a floppy disk. Writing essays off-line saves time as well as the most recent version of the essay in case the connection is lost. • Is the Web page you’re working with still on-line? Or is it from storage in your computer’s temporary files? Ensure that you’re working with a ‘live’ connection. With Internet Explorer, make the following setting: 1. CLICK ‘Tools’ to open a pull down menu 2. CLICK ‘Internet Options’ to open the ‘Internet Options’ box 3. CLICK TAB called ‘General,’ at the top left of the ‘Internet Options’ box 4.
