DANCING IN SPACE & DANCING IN TIME
YOUR ORDER . . .
Together these two books provide a complete textbook package that
can be used by students in Years 9‒12. Dancing in Space separates
space from the other elements of time and dynamics to help students explore and
understand space without the complexity of the other elements. Similarly,
Dancing in Time allows students to explore the elements of time and
dynamics and how they can be used in performing, composing and
analysing dance. Either textbook can be used on its own.
Dancing in Space was voted Australia’s best secondary textbook
and Dancing in Time was shortlisted for the same award when it
was released.

DANCING IN SPACE
DANCING IN TIME
Dancing in Space is a textbook for Year 9‒2 students. It was judged best Australian
secondary textbook by the Australian Publishers Association and Sydney
University’s Teaching Resources and Textbooks Research Unit (an annual award
judged on clarity of writing, pedagogical implications, illustrations, special
features and characteristics, quality of subject matter, innovation and flair).
Dancing in Time is the companion title to Dancing in Space. Together
these books provide a complete textbook package that can be used by
students in Years 9-12. Dancing in Time allows students to explore the
elements of time and dynamics and how they can be used in performing,
composing and analysing dance.
The text separates the element of space from the other elements of time
and dynamics to help students explore and understand space without the
complexity of the other elements. The book includes hundreds of full-colour
illustrations and more than  student activities. The - has image
libraries, activity templates and links to internet sites. Both book and -
provide interrelated performing, composing and appreciating activities, and
cross-curriculum content, including literacy and technology activities.
Each chapter engages with time and dynamics from a different viewpoint.
Links are drawn between similar concepts explored in different chapters.
Chapters contain foundational content under subheadings, which
students explore, and demonstrate understanding of, through practical,
reflection, literacy and technology activities.
chapters: moving in space – how the body moves in space, personal space,
general space, performance space; composing with space – shape, level,
dimension, direction, pathway, spatial relationships; space and dance style
– classical ballet, modern dance, jazz dance, African-derived dance, tap dance,
Latin and American dance, traditional dance; space in the arts – architecture,
sculpture, painting, multimedia/installation, drama – how spatial concepts
in each artform relate to dance, and how they can be used as stimulus for
dance; space and intention – individual, pair and group composition
and performance tasks based on a range of stimuli – images, concepts,
themes, narratives; writing about space – using and extending vocabulary,
constructing written texts; recording space – basic labanotation symbols,
other notation systems, other recording devices: video, photography.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Deidhre Wauchop is the Manager of the Creative Arts Unit, nsw Department
of Education, and a dance lecturer at unsw. Deidhre has taught dance in
schools and is co-founder and treasurer of the Dance Educators Professional
Association, a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing support
and inspiration for dance students and teachers. She has a Masters
degree in Creative Arts Education with a major in Dance. Deidhre
has choreographed over 120 works for school, education department,
university and professional organisations, and she has embraced
innovations in technology, making dance videos and virtual dances.
Hundreds of practical activities guide students to understand simple
concepts such as duration, tempo and stillness, through to more complex
concepts such as rhythmic patterns, phrasing and time relationships.
Students will also learn about the important role of music in dance
composition through understanding similarities and differences of time
and dynamics in music and dance. Like Dancing in Space, Dancing in
Time has stimulus for composing works and processes that lead students
through the construction of a dance. The music provided with the text
gives students additional auditory stimulus for making works. All content
is designed for varying abilities, and there are strategies provided for
using the texts, activities and resources in a variety of ways.
CD-ROM AND MUSIC CD
Accompanying Dancing in Time are a time cd-rom and a time music cd.
The time cd-rom contains interactive worksheets, journal and writing
templates, video excerpts and music tracks, all with accompanying
activities. The time music cd contains music tracks of varying tempos,
time signatures, styles and moods to use in dance studies.
FUTURE RESOURCES
By way of additional resources for Dancing in Space and Dancing in
Time, Deidhre Wauchop is preparing materials that we hope to make
available online.
