Principles of Sociology 6 April 2011 Response Paper http://www.alternet.org/story/48856/ Summary: In the article “Why Sexist Language Matters,” Sherryl Kleinman discusses how gendered and sexist language, such as “you guys”, continue to accentuate gender inequality in our society. While we may not be consciously aware that using this language continues to reinforce men as superior to women. Kleinman argues if we can cut this generic language out of our speech, women can begin to gain societal status. Response: I do not agree with this article at all. I’ve heard this argument a few times, and I almost feel that it is an excuse for women to continue to argue that they are oppressed. I personally feel that women have received equal rights in our society. We have fought and won that battle. While at one time men did hold many of those positions (Chairmen, Freshmen), it is not the case anymore, and I don’t see why women should be offended by “men” in those titles. After I heard about this “sexist language” the first time, I asked my friends if they were offended by being called a “freshman.” The answer was no. Personally, when I am referring to a large group of people I say y’all, but many of my friends say “you guys,” and I personally don’t see a problem with it. I think that “guys” and “freshmen” have become gender neutral terms. Questions: 1) If women don’t want to be seen as sex objects, then how come promiscuity is such a problem in our society today? 2) What is so horrible about being a housewife? If there were no mothers, our society would be a dim place. There would be no civilization. Just because women chose to be stay at home mothers doesn’t mean they should be treated as lesser individuals or that they are in a lesser occupation.
