Lord of the Flies: Chapter 4
Questions
Answer these questions after writing your chapter summary.
Some of these questions require detailed textual analysis. Think
back to how closely we looked at the section of Chapter 1 in our
first ‘Lord of the Flies’ lesson to help work out how much you
should be doing.
(1) ‘Littluns’ and ‘biguns’ are used to distinguish different groups?
Why no names? What is Golding suggesting by doing this?
(2) What is the significance of the fact that the ‘mulberry-marked’
boy is still missing? Perhaps this is an omen of evil – a clue that all
is not well in paradise?
(3) Closely read paragraph “The subsoil…ruins”, on p. 78 (in
yellow book). Analyse the content, paying particular attention to
language and style. What do you think is the significance of the
“old life”?
(4) Look closely at p. 80 (“Sameric. Get me a coconut…The mask
compelled them”.) What evidence is there that the boys are
becoming less civilised and more like savages?
(5) Why is Piggy classed as an “outsider”?
(6) How does Ralph assert his “chieftainship” over Jack?
