「Great Expectations」
Book Review：
The story “Great Expectations” described the leading role “Philip” seeked his life’s process. In this story, Philip is a
conscientious and dependable boy. Philip could earn the help of money to realize his great expectations later, because Philip
helped the convict who had escaped and Pip kept this secret ever. A author （Hilary Burningham）expressed the roles different
characters and positions in this book. However, Abel Magwitch was a convict who was a frightening man, but he was an
important figure from this story which didn’t have conspicuous distinguishing at the outset.
In the story, Philip liked Miss Havisham’s adopted daughter, Estella. Miss Hevisham had a sad story, so she learned Estella to
be a girl who was cold-heart and didn’t have love. This plot revealed that Miss Havisham had a sad story, so she learned Estella
to be a girl who was broken-hearted by her fiancé. Afterwards, the same things happened that Estella hurt Philip’s hreat. In this
story, it had very interesting small details was Author’s attentive. Estella’s real father was this convict, Able Magwitch. Abel
Magwitch’s friends in jail;Compeyson who was Miss Havisham’s fiancé and Arthur who was her half-brother. The characters
were closely linked this story. From this story “Great Expectations”, we could discover that Author wanted to express Philip
seeked his expectations and spirit. In the story, the convict （Abel Magwitch）told Philip that he was the benefactor； Philip was
astonished even didn’t want his help. Finally, although Abel Magwitch’s help along with he was arrested and passed away in the
end but I thought that Philip should obtain many things from he wanted to seek “great expectations”.
I read this book twice. First, I felt this book was complicated because the story had a lot of different roles and tortuous plot.
So I spent many time on this book. I chose to read the story again because I hoped that I could more understand this story what
meaning to express. In this book, I liked “Philip” this role . Because I observed that Author wanted to appear Philip’s mood
changing. It was impressive and I found fulling “love”, “help” and “care” in this story. However, Philip grew in the ordinary
family but he never gave up his “great expectations” and earned the help of many people in his life. Due to all sorts of
accidental mishaps, Philip gained the convict who was rescued by Philip. Philip learned what was the wrong or right love from
Miss Havisham and Estella. Finally, Philip didn’t finish his “great expectations” although, but I felt that he earned his dream
that married with his lover, Estella. I didn’t often read the English novel, but this story “Great Expectations” made me learning a
lot of things including love, family’s love and friendliness. However, I didn’t like the role’s darkness aspect in the story but I
liked that Author vivid writing style was very originality and interesting. From another point of view, we could discovered and
learned many different things in this book, this story.
