CRANE
They’ve always been Bharatpur’s most high – profile visitors . Guide Pratap Singh,
recalling the arrival of 41 Siberian cranes ( Grus leucogeranus ) in mid – ‘80s. says:
“Their call made me feel Krishna was playing the flute.” Yet, after braving weather
extremes on this 5,500 – mile migratory route, these graceful cranes haven’t arrived in
KNP since ’02. Habitat loss and hunting have decimated the central population of the
cranes. But with help from hang glider Angelo D’Arrigo , the International Crane
Foundation, ICF , can facilitate the bird’s return . D’Arrigo will train young Sibes to
follow his glider on short distances til they can sail the thermals , between Russia ,
And Iran and eventually Bharatpur . All range countries , including India , have signed an
MoU for this species’ conservation . “But unless KNP’s water supply improves , we will
have to find an alternative site,” contends Gopi Sundar of the ICF.
All that these winter visitors want us water and some Scripus tuberosus ( a tuber that
grows in Bharatpur’s marshes ) . That shouldn’t be hard for a culture that believes in
‘atithi devo bhava’ ( guests are akin to God).

Imagine that you are the Secretary of the School Hobby Club . This year you are
planning to on a WATER RAFTING Expedition to the Himalayas. Write an ARTICLE
on Water Rafting for your school magazine .
Use the information given :
What is water rafting? : It is an adventure sport in which expeditions are taken down
rivers. Anybody can participate in this sport – other sport require training – in river rafting
you’re given the equipment , a safety briefing & you are ready for the trip.
Which rivers are suitable? : A good place to go on a water rafting is on the Ganga –
specially Devaprag – waters of the Alaknanda & Bhagirathi meet .
What should we wear on a water rafting expedition ? : The most comfortable – simple T
– shirt and tights – dry quickly – wear wet suits and woolen thermals while sailing.
What equipment do we need ? : Rubber raft made3 of tear – resistant nylon – an oar for
