The purpose of the National Honor Society is to “create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to
promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.” The Bethel Park chapter of the National
Honor Society will uphold the four NHS pillars of Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service.
Dear Prospective Inductee:
On behalf of all of the members of the National Honor Society, we would like to congratulate you
on proving yourself worthy of membership in scholarship, the first of four tenets required for induction
into the National Honor Society. In addition, you must also express excellence in three other categories:
character, leadership, and service. To show the selection committee how you exemplify each of these
qualities, we ask that you complete a brief and TYPED application, which entails the following:




An essay that demonstrates your aptitude in each of the four pillars of the National Honor
Society
A detailed proposal for a community service project that can be carried out within the
National Honor Society
Two teacher recommendations that support your essay (see attached)
A record of at least thirty-five hours of community service that you have participated in during the
past year (see attached)
. You MUST type your responses directly on the application form.
By returning your application to Mr. Lorenzi in room 223 on or before Monday March 14, 2016,
you indicate your commitment in working to improve our chapter of the National Honor Society, not just
joining it. As a member, you will be required to attend meetings and activities and will be expected to
volunteer a minimum of thirty-five hours of your time each year to community service. Failure to do so
may result in dismissal from the organization.
If you are interested in joining the National Honor Society, please submit your application to
Mr. Lorenzi in a manila envelope with your name and homeroom on the front, by the end of the day
3/16/15. Please hand the envelope to Mr. Lorenzi personally so as to ensure that it does not get
misplaced (if possible).
The students that meet all of the requirements will be invited to a formal induction ceremony in the
high school Auditorium. If you have any questions or concerns, please see Mr. Lorenzi in room 223.
