Robert Lawrence Humanities October 5, 2005 Professor Lee October 4, 2005 Class Notes Today we started class with a presentation by Sarah on what she thought the Odyssey meant to her, she basically gave an overview of the story and her main thoughts were that Odysseus was dedicated, determined, and dependable, she compared it to the Fox 5 theme. After Sarah’s presentation Professor Lee did a review of what we discussed last class time, about the key characters of the Iliad, and she summarized the story of the Iliad. She then proceeded to talk about what the Odyssey was and how it was the sequel to the Iliad. She notes that Odysseus had difficulty returning to his home from the war, he faced many obstacles such as Cyclops, and he was the not the same young man he was when he left for the war, he returned home an old man. Professor Lee then discussed how the time in the Odyssey is convoluted and multidimensional, its not one straight genealogical time line. Next we looked at book 19 of the Odyssey and she briefly discussed it with us. After that she gave us a 10 min break and upon our return Danny did his presentation on the difference between the Odyssey and the Iliad and how the Odyssey was more mature than the Iliad, and how the Iliad had more action and was glory centric. After Danny’s presentation, it was at that time that we were dismissed from class.
