Censorship: Vicki Buita’s reconsideration policy and censorship thoughts: “The Anderson Community Schools has a reconsideration policy in place. People who object to materials must first fill out this paperwork. Most don’t want to do that. This is my 30th year as a library media specialist; I have had a few parents complain about materials over the years. As luck would have it, every book that the parents were concerned about was a book that I had read. I could then discuss the book – and its positive attributes, and most of them could not. They were just protesting based on what they’d heard, what students had said, etc. (Titles that were mentioned included Lois Lowry’s The Giver, Lois Duncan’s Killing Mr. Griffin. some Harry Potter books.) In my experience a calm, understanding discussion goes a long way toward defusing these controversies.”
