SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
1. RULES
1.1
The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing.
1.2
Class Rules except as altered by sailing instructions will apply.
1.3
Opti sailors will fly a colored pennant on their sprit, representing the color of the fleet in which
they are registered.
1.4
Sunfish Green will fly a green colored pennant.
1.5
Practice sails will be legal for competition in all classes, subject to measurement
2. ENTRIES
2.1
Competitors may enter by completing a registration form the day of race and paying the $45.00
for boat and skipper, $15.00 crew entry fee for the series or boat and skipper $15.00, crew $5.00 for daily
registration to Beachwood Yacht Club. Registration will start at 10:00 am the day of the race.
2.2
Three (3) boats will constitute a Fleet.
3. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS
Notices to competitors will be posted on the official notice board located on the Beachwood Yacht Club
(BYC) Notice Board.
4. CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
Any change to the sailing instructions will be posted at least two hours prior to the scheduled Warning
Signal.
5. SCHEDULE
5.1
A Skipper’s Meeting at 12:30 P.M. the day of each race at Beachwood Yacht Club.
5.2
The warning signal for the first race will be at 1:00 P.M. Subsequent races will be held as soon as
possible after the end of the previous race. Schedule is at the discretion of the Race Committee. The Race
Committee will make every attempt to complete three (3) races each day for a total of twelve (12) races.
5.3
No race will start after 3:00 P.M. except at the discretion of the regatta chair
6. RACING AREA
The approximate course locations are shown in Attachment A. Modification of course location may be
made at the Skipper’s Meeting.
7. COURSE[S]
7.1
Two to three courses will be set comprised of Course One for Sunfish, Laser Radial Fleet, Club
420, M-Scows, Ensigns, and other fleets (rolling starts will be applied), Course Two for Opti’s (rolling
starts will be used for combined Opti’s and Opti Green). A third course may be added as needed.
The following diagram shows the general layout of the course. Courses will be a combination of
triangular and windward—leeward with all marks left to port. Course size, combination and length will
be at the discretion of the race committee.
7.2
8. Marks
The marks will be red or orange buoys with the exception of the buoy on the port end of the finish line for
Opti course, which will be white.
9. STARTING & STARTING SYSTEM
9.1
The start shall be between the Committee Boat displaying a staff with an orange flag and a red or
orange buoy at the port end.
9.2
After starting and before finishing, a boat may not cross the finish line.
9.3
For rolling starts on Courses One and Two, boats whose warning signal has not been made shall
avoid starting area.
Races will start by a dinghy starting sequence: Three minutes, two minutes, one minute, thirty
seconds, twenty seconds, ten seconds, 5,4,3,2,1 and then the starting horn. This changes Appendix S.
9.4
9.5
The Race Comittee will attempt to hail all boats that are On Course Side (OCS) of the starting line.
Failure of Race Committee to hail; failure of a boat to receive their recall hail; a boat’s position in the
sequence of hail; or promptness of hail shall not be grounds for redress. This changes RRS 62.1(a).
9.6
In the advent that numerous yachts are OCS a general recall will be signalled by several shorthorns
and announcement by the committee boat. The new starting sequence will begin with the two-minute
horn, one minute after the recall signal has sounded.
9.7
During any recall, the “Round the Ends Rule” will apply as per Rule 30.1. Code Flag *I* will not
be displayed.
10. FINISH
10.1 The finish will be between the Committee Boat displaying an orange flag on a staff and the red or
orange buoy at the port end of the finish line with the exception of the Opti course which will have a
white buoy at the port end of the finish line.
10.2
Any yacht that does not cross the designated finish line will be scored as a DNF.
10.3 Yachts clearing the finish line at the end of the race shall not re-cross the finish line. To do so
will automatically disqualify the yacht (DSQ).
10.4 Any skipper withdrawing from a race without notifying the Race Committee shall be scored as
DSQ.
11. PENALTY SYSTEM
A boat that may have broken a rule in Part 2 may take a one turn penalty as described in RRS 44.1. This
is a change to RRS 44.1.
12. TIME LIMIT
The time limit for each race will be at the discretion of the Race Committee. Any boat finishing later than
fifteen minutes of the first finishing boat will be scored DNF.
13. PROTESTS
Protests shall be delivered to Regatta Chair within ½ hour after the Race Committee boat docks. The
protest time limit and a list of protests received will be posted on the notice board. Hearings will be held
as soon as possible after racing each day at Beachwood Yacht Club.
14. SCORING
14.1 Twelve races are scheduled. If nine or more races are completed, each boat's nine best scores will
be included in her series score. One race constitutes a series.
14.2
If nine or more races are completed, a boat must compete in a minimum of 9 races to qualify. If
less than nine races are completed, a boat must compete in all races to qualify.
14.3
Low Point Scoring Systems will be used. (Reminder: DSQ’s can not be dropped.)
14.4
All scores will be final ½ hour after being posted.
15. SAFETY EQUIPMENT
15.1
The Race Committee reserves the right to call for a safety inspection at any time.
15.2
Life jackets with whistles attached will be worn by all competitors at all times.
15.3
Each racing yacht shall have the following equipment on board;
A All yachts are to have their sail number on both sides of their sail.
b. All Optis are required to have on board standard equipment as per USODA regulations.
c. Club 420: Paddle, bailer, and painter.
16. TROPHIES
Trophies will be awarded for each of the fleets based on the number of qualifiers in accordance with the
following rules:
a. A minimum of three (3) boats must qualify for a fleet to receive awards
b. In addition to overall trophies in the Opti Fleet, trophies will also be awarded based on
the number of qualifiers, for Red, Blue, White, and Green Fleets. (Green Fleet is not
included in the Opti Overall)
c. A Perpetual Trophy will also be awarded for first place in the following qualifying
Fleets: Opti Overall, Opti Red, Opti White, Opti Blue, Opti Green, Laser Full Rig, Laser
Radial, Laser 4.7, Sunfish, Sunfish Green, Flying Scot, and M-Scow, Ensign.
It is the responsibility of the winner to have his/her name engraved on the trophy and
return it to BYC on or before the first race of the 2010 Fall Series.
d. Keeper Trophies:
•
First Place: All classes which qualify.
•
Second Place: From four (4) to eight (8) qualifiers
•
Third Place: From nine (9) to fifteen (15) qualifiers
•
Fourth Place: From sixteen (16) to twenty-two (22) qualifiers
•
Fifth Place: Greater than twenty-six (22) qualifiers
17. DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY
Competitiors participate in the Fall Series entirely at their own risk. See RRS4, Decision to Race. The
organizing authority will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained
in conjunciton with or prior to, during or after the regatta.
