Weber State University MUS 1010 Concurrent Enrollment Course presented at Weber High School Fall Semester Disclosure Document 2011 – 2012 Joseph M. Windsor, Instructor (801-476-3753) COURSE DESCRPTION: In this course we will be studying the effect of music on our lives using the text “Music! Its Role and Importance In Our Lives.” We will cover all styles of music, all historical periods of music and basic music fundamentals. You will be asked to do several projects in the course of our study. You will need access to the internet and be willing to share your ideas with the class. Concurrent Enrollment from Weber State is available to JUNIORS and SENIORS who pass the course. Sophomores who pass will receive a fine arts credit towards graduation. INTERNET ACCESS IS NEEDED TO COMPLETE MANY CLASS ASSIGNMENTS. REQUIRED DAILEY MATERIALS: 1. Text, paper, pen/pencil for taking notes. 2. Folder/notebook to keep all materials/handouts organized. 3. Positive Attitude 4. Willingness to take a chance!! GRADING: Grades will be based (weighted) on the following categories: Notes – 20%, participation – 40%, tests – 25%, projects – 15% GRADING SCALE: 93 – 100 % = A 91 – 92% = A88 – 90% = B+ 83 – 87% = B 81 – 82% = B78 – 80% = C+ 73 – 77% = C 71 – 72% = C- 68 – 70% = D+ 63 – 67% = D 61 – 62% = D00 – 60% = F CITIZENSHIP Based on classroom behavior. ASSIGNMENTS: Tests will be given at the end of each chapter and unit. Bell quizzes will be given periodically over the material covered in class or any homework assigned. Each chapter will have a project to complete. Details will be given in class as well as the due date. The project allows for you to be as creative as possible within the guidelines of the assignment. You will be given a quarter calendar. Please note all due dates. This calendar will be followed regardless of your attendance. You are expected to come prepared each day to discuss or turn in any assignment due. Notes from chapter readings, class discussions and student presentations will also be graded. Questions from tests will also come from this material. Video Concert Report: Each quarter you will be expected to write a 500 word essay on a video concert that you have watched. Exact guidelines will be given in class. Live Concert Report: Each quarter you will be expected to attend one of the concerts given by the Weber High School Band, Choir or Orchestra or other local groups (you can not be a performer in the group you critiquing) . You will be given a form to fill out for this assignment. Exact details will be given out in class. Rock or concerts similar are not acceptable for this assignment. ATTENDANCE/LATE WORK/MAKE-UP WORK: Students are to be in their assigned seats by the time the late bell finishes ringing, otherwise they will be marked as tardy (unique situations can be addressed). Students will be given 2 school days after returning from an absence to turning work or complete tests (tests must be done during EO Hour or after school). LATE WORK: Worked turned in late will be docked 25% for the first 2 days, 50% on the third and after 3 days the student will receive 10% maxim mum of the original total. After 5 days the assignment will not be accepted. Work missed as a result of an ncleared (unexcused) absence or truancy/suspension will not be accepted. Make up work is available by arrangement with Mr. Windsor. CLASS FEES: The only fee associated with the course will be assigned if you damage the text provided. The cost varies depending on the amount/severity of the damage. For those who choose to take the course for WSU Credit, fees apply and will be discussed in class. STUDENT HELP: I use student aides to assist in correcting papers. These students have signed an agreement to keep all information confidential. I will also, on occasion, have students correct the work of others. Please mark on the signature page if you give your missing for this process.
