The American Ways
American, a nation of immigrants, is creating a fusion of miracles. It is trying to maintain the
language and cultural traditions based on different combination of immigrant’s values and their
traditional culture. The traditional American values guide people from generation to generation
toward a better future.
Racism and Group Superiority
This is a deviant theme, not central, but still widespread. This value takes its form in recial,
religious, ethnic, and sexual discrimination.
In fact, all the discrimination originates from prejudice. As we all know, everybody has
behaviors that prejudice to against others, but everyone performance for the sign of prejudice in
different areas, the degree of prejudice are not same. When an individual negative perceptions and
attitudes too strong, the prejudice further develop into the discrimination.
For the quote, this is the reason why exist discrimination in American society. Because
American is a country of immigrants, lots of people come from different countries, have different
race, belong to different ethnic group. They have different traditional cultures and values. Based
on the total factors, These differences would ferment or create some culture shock. When their
status, rights, interests, habits, cultures are affected and they want to protect them, Some special
collective discrimination occurs in that time.
However, discrimination is inequality treatment, and it destroyed the value of United States.
In the “The American Ways”, page34, paragraph 16, the author Datesman said :“ For them,
equality means that everyone should have an equal chance to enter the race and win. In other
words, equality of opportunity may be thought of as an ethical rule .”. It describes the value of
United States - equality, it gives American citizens the right fair choice, no matter what country
you’re from, no matter which race you owned, no matter which ethnic group you belong to, no
matter. Every one have same opportunity to create their future as long as you have the ability to
achieve. Life is not to be bound. Each person's soul is free.
Freedom
Americans also seek freedom from some restraint, having confidence in the individual. Freedom
enters into free enterprise, progress, individual choice, and equality. It has not meant the absence
of social control.
Freedom, Individual can complete based on their own consciousness and the ability to do
anything, not being forced by other individuals or external changes. But this freedom is relative,
and individuals should accept the constraints of society in the community. People need to be
responsible for his own actions, it means that the relationship of different individual is mutual
constraints. Combined with United States current status, American is a free country, because every
citizen has the right to choose freedom. In the “The American Ways”, page 32, paragraph 9, the
author Datesman said :“ By freedom, Americans mean the desire and the right of all individual to
control their own destiny without outside interference form the government, a ruling noble class,
the church, or any other organized authority.”. It shows that people want to do everything and they
can do it. The most important point is that people don’t want to do the things and they cannot do
it.
