Students learn about computers and how to use them while learning English as a second language. During the semester, students engage in collaborative activities and group projects in both courses. In the computer course, students learn the basic concepts and terminology of computers in addition to five software packages. The software packages include Microsoft Word (word processing), Microsoft Excel (spreadsheets), and Microsoft Access (database). In addition, students use Microsoft PowerPoint to create electronic slide shows/presentations and Microsoft Internet Explorer to navigate the World Wide Web. Students attend both lectures and labs for this component of the pair. The ESL course provides language lessons centered on the language of computers. Activities include weekly writing of compositions, weekly group discussions, and collaborative projects that the students work on in both courses.
