CHRISTIAN SERVICE PROJECT – 15%

Your Grade 12 service project will focus on Christ’s call to you to reach out with mercy and compassion
to his people. It is hoped that you will allow the Holy Spirit to inspire you in your service decisions
and, thus, show the love of Christ in action through your work.
In order to receive credit for this class, you must complete the required number of service hours
and hand in the reflection paper written according to the instructions provided.
SERVICE PROJECT REQUIREMENTS:
1. Service Hours: Students taking CE 30 must complete…
7.5 hours of Works of Mercy and 7.5 hours of Service in the Community
Works of Mercy: Service that is extended to people in special need, the elderly, the physically
and mentally challenged and the less fortunate in our community.
Service in the Community: Work carried out by volunteer organizations and groups.
You must be able to identify the official name of the organization or group for
works of mercy and service in the community.
2. Guidelines For Choosing Service Opportunities:
a. Service must be directed to the community – you must not work for family, extended
family, friends, employers or political parties.
b. You must not receive payment for the service, nor do service where payment is normally
possible.
c. You are not to use community hours completed as part of the “fine option” program.
d. It is your responsibility to determine which service will be approved, before you complete
the hours. Failure to be approved before completing the hours will result in your having to
do them over if they are not acceptable.
e. Any service that is associated with a business or business activity will not be accepted.
f. Service completed for any activity which promotes non-Catholic values will not be accepted. E
xample: fundraising for AIDS where the money goes to “safe-sex” programs.
g. You must complete hours outside your regularly scheduled class time.
h. Service hours are to be done only during the semester in which you are taking
Christian Ethics.
i. Grade 12 students are to complete all service hours in the community, not at BJM, except
volunteering with our students with special needs.
3. Record of Service:
All hours of service must be verified by using a BJMHS CHRISTIAN SERVICE RECORD.
The record of service sheet must be filled out exactly according to the instructions on it.
4. Reflection Paper:
Complete the reflection paper as instructed on the back of this page.
You must attach the CHRISTIAN SERVICE RECORD sheets for all of the completed 15 hours.

Read: James 2:14-26 and John 13:1-15
Summarize each of these passages individually and explain how the service you
provided fits into Jesus’ expectation of his followers.

 3 to 4 pages
 double spaced, size 12 font
 headings must be in bold print
 have a title page, including the date handed in
Hand in your completed service project in the following order:

2. Planning sheet (if filled in)
3. Service Record sheets ( for all 15 hours)

Punctuality and Assessment:
It is expected that this major project be fully completed according to the expectations above
and handed in on the date it is due. Marks will be subtracted if you do not follow the correct
format for the reflection paper or the content is lacking in completeness. All service records
and the reflection paper must be handed in together.
COMPLETION OF THE SERVICE HOURS AND A CORRECTLY PREPARED PAPER WITH

CHRISTIAN SERVICE PROJECT – 10%

Grade 10 Christian Ethics course focuses on Jesus and his message. Students are to acquire and
develop the knowledge, skills/abilities, and values necessary to live as followers of Jesus Christ.
Service to others is a distinguishing part of Christian life. It is making “love of neighbor” a reality.
In order to receive credit for this class, you must complete 5 service hours and hand in the
reflection paper written according to the instructions provided.
SERVICE PROJECT REQUIREMENTS:
1. Service Hours: Students taking CE 10 must complete 5 hours of Service in the Community
Please look for opportunities to complete your hours by serving the BJM school community
before seeking service hours in the larger community.
If you choose to serve in the larger community, you must be able to identify the official name
of the organization or group.
2. Guidelines For Choosing Service Opportunities:
Service at BJM
a. Must relate directly to the well being of students and/or guests in our school
b. Work must be done in cooperation with a school authority: administration, teacher,
educational assistant, secretarial, or care-taking staff.
c. Work normally the responsibility of a school authority is not to be used for service hours.
d. You must complete hours outside your regularly scheduled class time.
Service in Community
a. Service must be directed to the community – you must not work for family, extended
family, friends, employers or political parties. Ex______________________________________________
b. You must not receive payment for the service, nor do service where payment is normally

c. It is your responsibility to determine which service will be approved, before you complete the

person in authority at the time the work is done. This must not be parents, family members, or friends.

Complete the reflection paper as instructed on the back of this page.
You must attach the CHRISTIAN SERVICE RECORD sheets for all of the completed 5 hours.

ion paper – contribute 10% to your final grade in this course. Marks will be subtracted if yo
