made him any better than his nearest neighbors was, that if scrubbed with
lye soap in very hot water, his skin was white.” What does she mean by
“better”? Is any person better than any other person? What makes someone
better than someone else? What is the value of a person? What makes an
individual valuable? What makes one individual more valuable than another
individual? Who are the best people in our society? Who are the most
valuable people? Is there a difference between “best” and “most valuable”?
What traits/characteristics does our society value? How does our society
reward “good” people? How does our society reward “valuable” people?
