COMMUNITY ESSAYS (Auckland) ‘ Promoting Ideas ‘ TERTIARY STUDENT ESSAY COMPETITION Who is ‘Community Essays Inc.’? We are a group of businessmen with a common interest in promoting the idea that self reliance leads to self esteem; we seek to combat the ideas that we believe can lead to youth drop-out and even suicide. We believe, like Alan Duff, that reading and writing introduces youngsters to a world of books that may have been unknown to them before and so give a new lease of life and a new confidence in their own abilities. Objective: To foster young people’s writing talents; to encourage reading and writing for pleasure and education; to further the idea that self-improvement comes from self-effort, and from this comes self-esteem and selfconfidence. We want to encourage the idea that one individual can make a difference. Outline: Community Essays (Auckland) intends to offer a prize for an annual essay competition. This competition will be initially offered among Auckland tertiary students and will ask students to write an essay based on a chosen topic. The winning essays will be judged by a panel of well known Aucklanders and will be judged on both style and content, and a high standard of analytical thought will be expected. Judges will look for writing that is clear, articulate and logically organised. Winners will be announced in the local press. Sponsors and Advertising: Sponsorship is being sought to help promote the 1998 competition. Advertising will be throughout the Auckland based student, youth and local media e.g. Radio bFM and Radio Pacific, Craccum Magazine, Rip It Up Magazine, local newspapers etc.; we also will be issuing press releases to national media to attract wider interest for coming years when the competition will be nationwide. Sponsors will of course be mentioned in all advertisements and, where appropriate, in all press releases. Competition Entrants The competition is open to all Auckland tertiary students.
