Creating Your Own Utopia Directions: In your groups, you will create your own Utopia. You may create a brochure or poster board. DUE DATE: ________________________________ 1. Cover Page: Proper Heading with all group member names, date (spelled out), period #, assignment name is: UTOPIA. Also include picture(s) of your utopia and its name. If making a poster, this must be on the back of the poster. 2. Name: Create a suitable name for your Utopian Society. It cannot be a name already in existence nor can it be Utopia. Make sure you can spell it and pronounce it. 3. Geographic Location & Map: Where will your utopia be located? Explain why in one paragraph. After this is decided, you will create a map of your utopia showing its location in relationship to the rest of the world. Think about the weather to help locate your utopia. 4. Utopian Motto & Flag: Create a slogan or motto that inhabitants of your utopia would adhere to, and a utopian flag. It must be new and original. It cannot be one already used. 5. Utopian Animal: What animal would symbolically represent your utopia. Explain your choice. You cannot use an eagle. PART II: Government. DUE DATE: _____________________________________ 1. Declaration of Independence: Write a brief statement citing the reasons for the formation of your Utopian society. In other words, what specifically don't you like about our current society? Refer to The Declaration of Independence for ideas. This portion of the assignment should be three paragraphs in length. (Worksheet to follow) 2. Governing Body: How will the government of this utopia be structured? Will you have a democracy, anarchy, monarchy, dictatorship, or something combining the best of all of them or something completely new? How will your utopia make decisions? Explain your reasons in one paragraph. 3. List of Rules: Develop a list of 10 rules that all community members would follow. Give a rationale for each rule. 4. Provisions of Life's Necessities: How will your utopia provide the basic necessities of life? Food, water, clothes, and transportation must be included; other things are up to your discretion (think of the things that one needs to live happily to help you figure this out). PART III: Daily Life. DUE DATE: _____________________________________ 1. Invite Some Friends to Join You: Write a persuasive essay/letter to a friend or relative on why your utopia is the best one in which to live. Must be five paragraphs. 2. Journal Entry: Write a journal entry for one day of the week. Include work, family, worship, school, entertainments, etc. This entry must be at least two paragraphs. Do not list the events of the day. 3. Daily Itinerary: How will Utopia inhabitants spend their time during the week? Develop a schedule that community members might follow during a typical day. Think of the different age groups to help come up with more than one schedule. 4. Advertisement: Develop a written advertisement for your community. This ad should be complete with pictures that are representative of life in your community. Think of magazine and newspaper ads. It must also have your slogan/motto and flag upon it.
