The students will review grammar concepts such as infinitive, gerunds,
Adjective/adverb confusion and faulty parallelism.

ACTIVITIES:
The students will learn the historical and cultural background of Anglo-Saxon Britain.
They will read and comprehend the literature of the period through pieces such as
Caedmon’s Hymn, The Seafarer, The Wanderer, Beowulf, and Anglo-Saxon Riddles.
ASSESSMENT: Open Notes Quiz, Beowulf Project, Modern Anglo-Saxon Riddle, Test,

ACTIVITIES:
The students will understand the historical and cultural background of
Medieval England.. There will be readings such as: the prologue of The
Canterbury Tales, The Pardoner’s Tale, The Wife of Bath’s Tale, Sir
Gawain and the Green Knight, Le Morte Darthur, and English Ballads.

THE NEW SAT

Every Friday the students will be drilled on the Critical Reading and Writing
Sections (which includes the 25 minute essay). The teacher will present strategies to
be used by the students in order to approach the SAT successfully.

Renaissance Period

ACTIVITIES:
Students will learn the historical and literary background of
Elizabethan England. They will learn the language, dramatic
techniques, themes, conflicts, characterization, and tragedies
presented in Shakespearean drama. They will read selections by
Wyeth, Spencer, Shakespeare, Marlowe, and Raleigh. Students will
also read the works of metaphysical and Carpe Diem poets such as:
Donne, Marvell,, Jonson, and Herrick.
ASSESSMENT:
Open Notes Quizzes, dramatic performance of Hamlet, writing a
Sonnet imitation, reading and viewing of Macbeth.

Throughout Second Semester
Students will find a suitable topic, collect information through usage of
college library, give credit to sources, learn parenthetical documentation
organize ideas and write a formal outline, rough draft, and final 5 to 7
page term paper with correctly cited references.

Students will read and understand John Milton’s works including
Paradise Lost were they will compare views in the Genesis and

Restoration. They will understand the “sting” of satire in Jonathan

WRITING PORTFOLIOS

The emphasis will be on the originality of the piece.
At the end of the year, the students will choose two rough drafts
and revise them. These will be handed in as two final drafts in a
Portfolio including a table of contents and a reflective essay
assessing the writer’s strengths and weaknesses.
Revised piece of writing (2) – 100 points each

Romantic/Victorian Periods

March - April
ACTIVITIES:
Students will learn the historical and cultural background of the
Romantic and Victorian periods. They will read selection by
“Romantics” Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, and Keats.
Students will also read the “Victorians” such as: Tennyson, Browning,
Hopkins, Arnold, and Wilde.

The Modern Age

ACTIVITIES:
Students will learn and understand the historical and cultural
background of the Modern Period. They will read a variety of Modern
Age selections by Virginia Woolf, D. H. Lawrence, and Elizabeth
Bowen. Students will also do a Power Point Poetry analysis.
