Letter of Recommendation The purpose of a letter of recommendation is just that: to recommend that some one hire you! The writer will be some one who can attest to your work ethic, personal qualities, and skills. The letter writer should be un-biased, so do not ask family members to write on your behalf. Ideally, you could ask a former employer, supervisor, neighbor that you have worked for, or some one who knows you well from your church, synagogue or temple. The letter does not have to be long (3 paragraphs) but must be typed and signed by the writer. Student may use letters of recommendation already created by staff for college applications or scholarships; otherwise the letter is to be written by non-staff. Here are some guidelines for the contents of the letter: 1st paragraph: The write states his/her name and how s/he knows the student and indicate how long. Example: “My name is Mrs. Kent and I have known Charlie Charger for three years. Charlie is my neighbor and I have hired him to do many jobs for me over the year” 2nd paragraph: Describe the type of work that the student has done. Describe the student’s work ethic (reliable, on-time, hard-working, etc.) and any special skills (works well with children, knows how to use specific software, etc) 3rd paragraph: recommends hiring the students for a similar position or something more general. It would be appropriate to write a short thank you note to the person who wrote the letter for you. Upload the letter into eFolio by scanning it in.
