Lord of the Flies
PreAP English 2
Timed Writing Exam
One of the following will be chosen for the exam:
#1
Read the passage from chapter 8, “Gift for the Darkness,” which begins “At last Ralph
stopped work and stood up…” and ends “The disc of the sun was dull silver as though it were
nearer and not so hot, yet the air stifled.” Discuss how the author develops the characters in the
passage using devices such as selection of detail, diction, syntax, and/or figurative language.
#2
Many novels present a character as a scapegoat, but the character also serves to present a
certain commentary on life. Choose a character from The Lord of the Flies, and explain how he
fulfills this two-part function.
#3
In some novels, specific settings are presented in conjunction with a certain symbolic
object (or objects) to reinforce the novel’s theme and/or to comment on humanity. Discuss how
this is true of The Lord of the Flies.
