Description of student(s) who need accommodations: Accommodations have been made Goal of the lesson: To teach the students of the class how to perform the Sicilian Tarantella. Instructional Objectives: Students will be able to perform the steps to the Sicilian Tarantella dance with partners and in groups of four and to the music 100% of the time. New Jersey’s Core Curriculum Content Standards and Cumulative Progress Indicators: 2.5.12.A.3 Design and lead a rhythmic activity that includes variations in time, space, force, flow, and relationships (creative, cultural, social, and fitness dance). Materials and Equipment List: Music for the Sicilian Tarantella and an open area to perform the dance. Technology Utilized in Lesson: CD player 2 Time Allotment Lesson Plan Segments How long does it take for every segment to be taught? Make sure you clearly indicate what the critical elements and cues are that you will use while teaching. 1 Instant Activity/Attendance: Use attendance lines to take quick attendance 10 Warm-ups: Do two warm up dances from previous lessons as chosen by the students. 3 Introduction/Motivation / Anticipatory Set: Introduce the students to the dance and give motivational story. 30 Learning tasks / experience: Break the dance into 4 main parts and teach them individually and build on each part with the next. Part 1: Step-hop right, swing left leg across while clapping. Step-hop left, swing right leg across while clapping. Run four steps in place while snapping fingers overhead. Repeat Part 2: Run 4 steps towards partner raising hands and snapping. Run 4 steps backward lowering hands and snapping. Repeat. Part 3: Head couples clap hands, run to meet neighbor, hook elbows and turn once. Repeat with other neighbor. Repeat Student Formations and Transitions Draw or type the names of the formations and transitions. Include specific check for understanding questions 6 lines with 4 students in each line. Spent the summer in Italy and at every party they would do this dance. Students will partner up and form a square with another set of partners. In the square each set of partners will be facing and opposite of each other. The students will be assessed based on their ability to perform the dance with their partners and to the music without stopping or making any mistakes. 3 with side couples taking the lead Part 4: Head couples do-si-do. Repeat. Form circle within group and skip 8 times counterclockwise with hands on hips. Repeat for clockwise. Repeat with right and left hand stars instead of hands on hips. 1 Lesson Closure: 2 questions How many running steps did we take towards our partner? 4 How many skips did we do counterclockwise in our group circles? 8 Teacher Reflection: Did the lesson go the way that you had planned?
