Moliere’s TARTUFFE At Centre Stage Theatre, 25 Quarry Street, Spring Hill. Who is fooling the fools? Or do the fools fool themselves? No, Tartuffe fools the fools! During Tartuffe’s 1664 premiere, Moliére’s hilarious and savage satire against power and piety enraged the religious censors, relying on the intervention of King Louis himself to continue the performance. Starlight Theatre Co-op revives this 17th Century French Satire performance at Centre Stage Theatre, Spring Hill with Play 5 in their 2008 Premiere Season. The wealthy Orgon is the master of his domain. He has a beautiful wife, Elmire, who has become the object of the religious zealot Tartuffe’s affections. Tartuffe uses the enormous influence that he has over Orgon as his spiritual guru to lead the lifestyle he has grown accustomed to – one of decadence, spiritual facades and deception. The beautiful ingénue Mariane, daughter of Orgon, has been promised to the eligible Valere by her father. However Orgon’s plan has changed – he wishes to graft Tartuffe into his own family tree with the hand of the young maiden. In ‘star crossed lover’ style the two need to hatch a plan so that they may remain betrothed. These machinations are crafted by Mariane’s world-wise handmaiden, Dorine. A buxom beauty who has no time for the pleasantries of courting and following a father’s wishes. While just as verbose, the matriarch of the family – Madame Pernelle – is a tour de force. Unashamed to enjoy the ‘respect’ a near century of life has afforded her, she is all too quick to extol Tartuffe’s virtues and condemn anyone who dares question her matronly wisdom. But rest assured, the truth will be revealed! Who will be married? Will all be blinded by the dazzle that is the religious fervour Tartuffe displays? What does Tartuffe really want with this household? What will come of it all?
