Chapter 20
*mark our vocab word in the first sentence!
*In the second paragraph, Pip says that Britons think England is the best; otherwise, he would have found
London to be, _____, ______, ________, and _________.
*Jaggers lives in Little Britain. Circle/highlight. It's a neighborhood.
* In the 5th-6th paragraph, you start to find out more about Jaggers. What does the coachman say?
Circle the clerk. Note how he treats "Mike."
Bracket the paragraphs starting with "Mr. Jaggers' room" and ending with "got up and went out."
Now, go back and highlight specific details of the office which help you know more about the man who uses it.
Specifically, find a diction family, and circle words, labeling the family in the margin.
Notice the "casts." These are plaster masks made of a person's face after death.

Men and women are waiting to see Jaggers. Highlight indications of Jaggers reputation AND his treatment of
these people. It is not that you need to understand their specific cases--just the relationship between attorney
and "client."
We are back to "Mike." Mike upsets Jaggers with this "witness" he is bringing around. Why? There is humor
here. See if you see it. It is also a life and death situation, so this is "black humor" or "dark humor."
At the end of the chapter, mark what Jaggers says about Pip--what he is sure will happen to him.
Mark the name of the clerk.
Ch. 21
Highlight Wemmick's jewelry. Wemmick wears "portable property." This takes some explaining. It was
customary when someone died to bequeath (give out as inheritance or gift to family/friends) engraved, gold,
mourning rings to remember the dead person. There were also seals, which often had the initials or the
signature of a person, and were used to stamp wax to seal a letter. These were sometimes given to close
mourners. Often, you wore these on your watch chain, or fob.
Highlight Wemmick's appearance, his age, his personality, and the METAPHOR of his mouth.
Bracket the description of Pip's apartment house called Barnard Inn. It begins, "Whereas I now" and ends with
"London was decidedly overrated." (Did you notice the word "expectations"?)
