The characters in the story ‘OLIVER TWIST’ Contributed by Hareth Nasser Al-Bahri, Sutal Secondary School for boys The main character in the story is Oliver Twist and in the story some characters troubled him and some helped him. The characters who were rude or troubled Oliver :1. Mr. Bumble 2. Mrs. Sowerberry 3. Noah Claypole 4. Fagin and his boys 5. Bill Sikes 6. Monks The characters who were kind or helped Oliver :1. Mr. Sowerberry ( tried to be kind) 2. Miss. Nancy 3. Mr. Brownlow 4. Mrs. Bedwin 5. Miss Rose Maylie Mr. Bumble was an important officer in the town. Later he became the master of the workhouse. He hit Oliver in front of all the boys to threaten all the boys in the workhouse. He offered Oliver and five pounds to Sowerberry. He also helped Monks to find the old woman who had Oliver’s ornaments. Mr. Brownlow saw that Bumble lost the job of master of the workhouse. Mrs. Sowerberry was a short thin woman with a face like a fox. When Oliver came to their house, she offered him the meat that was kept for the dog. She called Olive ‘little bag of bones’. She made life unpleasant for Oliver when he was in the shop. Noah Claypole was a big boy with small eyes and red nose. He worked in Mr. Sowerberry’s shop. His father was a drunken soldier and his mother washed clothes. Other boys were rude to him so, in turn he wanted to be rude to Oliver. He spoke ill of Oliver’s mother. He called Oliver ‘workhouse’ Fagin was an old man dressed in dirty clothes and his evil-looking face was half hidden by his red hair. He trained young boys to steal things from people. He threatened Oliver to hang if he tried to run away. He also hit Oliver hard when Nancy and Sikes brought him back. In the end he was hanged. Bill Sikes was a strong person of about thirty-five, with dirty clothes and angry eyes and was followed by a white dog. Oliver was very afraid of Sikes as he threatened Hareth Nasser Al-Bahri, Sutal Secondary School for boys him of killing him with a pistol. He murdered Nancy when she tried to help Oliver from Fagin and Monks. Finally, he had a miserable death. Monks was Oliver’s half brother. He tried many ways to destroy Oliver. He offered money to Fagin to turn Oliver into a thief again so that he will lose his life. He threw the bag of gold ornaments, which had the proof of Oliver’s birth. Finally, he died in a prison in America. Miss Nancy was a white and thin woman wearing old clothes. She was kind to the poor little Oliver. When Fagin tried to hit him, she stopped. She told the secret of Fagin and Monks to Miss Rose and Mr. Brownlow and begged them to save Oliver. At last she was killed by Sikes for trying to help Oliver. Mr. Brownlow was an old gentleman with white hair and gold glasses. When he looked at Oliver’s innocent face, he wanted to help him. But when he found that Oliver’s face and the picture of a young woman were same, he showed much interest in Oliver. Oliver told Rose that Brownlow was very kind to him. Brownlow saved Oliver from Fagin and Monks. This character not only helped Oliver but also made his life better. Mrs. Bedwin was an old lady who looked after the house of Brownlow. She looked after Oliver very well when he stayed in Brownlow’s house. She fed Oliver with good food. Miss Rose Maylie was a beautiful young girl of sixteen. She had blue eyes and a sweet smile. She loved Oliver with all her heart. She even taught him read and write. She told Nancy’s secret to Brownlow and asked him to save Oliver. Fagin’s boys: Jack Dawkins, Charley Bates and few others. Jack Dawkins offered Oliver food in an inn and took him to Fagin. He was a boy but he behaved like a man. He wore a man’s coat, which reached nearly to his feet and a man’s hat. Charley Bates stole handkerchief from Brownlow’s pocket near the bookshop. He told that Nancy met two people on London Bridge and told them about Fagin, Monks and Oliver. At the end Charley Bates changed his life from bad to good and worked for a farmer.
