Script Sheet A little twist of Oliver – version 2 Narrator : Ladies and gentleman welcome to “A Little Twist of Oliver.” join our story in a midlands workhouse in the 19th century. SONG: Food glorious food Bumble: For what we are about to see the Lord makes us truly thankful. Amen [Boys eat. Oliver goes up to Bumble with empty dish] Oliver: Please sir, I want some more. Bumble: What? Bumble chases Oliver around stage, whilst boys cheer. [Black out] Narrator: Oliver is sold to an undertakers as a mute, but escapes and heads to London to seek his fortune. [Oliver walks around front of stage, tired and cold] SONG: Where is love? [Curtain opens onto London Square] [Artful Dodger walks past Oliver] Oliver: Please help me, please. Dodger: What you starin’ at? Ain’t you never seen a toff? Oliver: No never. I’m sorry I didn’t .... Dodger: That’s alright...Hungry? Oliver: Yes I am. I’ve come a long way. I’ve been walking for seven days. Dodger: GS2012 –S8 Who you running away from – your old man? You Oliver: No, I’m and orphan. I’ve come to London to make my fortune. Dodger: Oh! You have, have you? Got any lodgings? (Oliver shakes head) Money? Oliver: Not a farthing...Do you live in London? Dodger: I suppose you want somewhere to sleep tonight? Oliver: Do you know of anywhere? Dodger: As it so happens, I know a respectable old gentlemen – He’ll give you lodgings for nothing. Oliver: Really? Dodger: And he’ll never ask for change if any other gentleman he knows introduces you...And don’t he know me! Oliver: He must be a very kind gentleman! Dodger: Oh yes, he’s very kind – and I’m a particular favourite of his...Well, if you’re coming along, better know who you are. Oliver: My name is Oliver... Oliver Twist. Dodger: Mine is Jack Dawkins – better known among my most intimate friends as the Artful Dodger. Oliver: Pleased to meet you. Are you sure the old gentleman won’t mind? Dodger: Mind!!! SONG: Consider Yourself (dodger solo first four lines) [The boys enter Fagin’s den.] Dodger: Hey, Fagin, I’ve bought a new friend to see you. (whispers in Fagins ear) Oliver: Sir. [Bows - others all laugh] Fagin: Glad to have the honour of your most intimate acquaintance. Dodger says you have come to London to make your fortune. We shall see what we can do! SONG: Pick a pocket GS2012 –S8 [Nancy enters] Nancy: Well who have we have here then? Fagin: May I introduce our new lodger, Oliver Twist. [Oliver bows...boys all laugh] Nancy: Don’t take any notice of them, they’ve got no manners. Dodger: I’m a regular gent, I am! [takes Nancy’s arm They walk around stage, Nancy includes Oliver.] Sykes enters. All cower out of the way. Sykes and Nancy speak to Fagin – then leave (whilst narrator speaking) Narrator: Nancy is the girlfriend of the infamous villain Bill Sykes. He has come to see Fagin to collect money he owes Bill. Dodger: Fagin, I think Oliver is ready to go to work with us. What do you say? Fagin: What a good idea my dears. Oliver, dodger will take care of you. If he doesn’t there will be trouble! SONG: Be back soon Narrator : Unfortunately Oliver is arrested for pick pocketing a kind old man, a crime actually committed by Dodger. Thankfully the truth was told in court and Oliver is released into the old man’s, Mr Brownlow’s, custody. He and his housekeeper take Oliver to his lovely home where he is given good food and a comfortable bed. SONG: Who will Buy Narrator: Oliver was kidnapped by Nancy as he did an errand for Mr Brownlow. Sykes kept him prisoner and forced him to help him with burglaries. Nancy, a good girl really, has deeply regretted her part in the kidnap. She has gone to see Mr Brownlow to try and make amends. Nancy: I’ve come about Oliver. Mr B: Is there news of him? Nancy: He’s in danger. He was dragged off the day you sent him out to buy books. Mr B: Who took him? GS2012 –S8 Nancy: Me and someone else. Mr B: You took him by force? Nancy: Yes! I wish I’d never been part of it! Mr B: Where is he now? Who is this other person you speak of? Can you take me to him? You want to help the boy don’t you? Then at least tell me where he is! Nancy: I can’t! But I’ll bring him to you. Not here, it’s too far. Mr B: Where then? Nancy: The London Bridge at midnight. But you’ve got to come alone. Promise you’ll come on your own. You don’t trust me, do you? But you’ve got to. Mr B: I’ll be there. Nancy: Thank God. Now let me go. Mr B: Wait! Is the boy hurt? Ill treated? Nancy: I can’t say no more. Please! He’ll kill me as it is if he finds out. Mr B: Who is this man? Nancy: No, I won’t tell you. Whatever else I do, I won’t turn on him, you wouldn’t understand. I’ve got to go back. I want to go back. Promise you’ll come? Mr B: At midnight. Narrator We now go to the Three Cripples pub. Nancy is planning to sneak Oliver away from Bill Sykes and take him to meet Mr Brownlow. SONG: Oom – pah -pah Narrator: Our story is at an end. Nancy did help Oliver escape, but was cruelly murdered by Sykes. Oliver was reunited with Mr Brownlow who turned out to be his long lost grandfather. They lived together happily ever after. Before we go there is one more thing to say. Please all join in.
