APRIL 4TH COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT CONFERENCE ATTENDEES

In conjunction with the launch
90th anniversary of the
Women’s Institute we
launched a project called
90@90 to investigate the
trends over the last 90 years in
consumer behaviour and the
changes that need to take
place in regards to energy,
transport and the home. In
September last year we
released the 90@90 report
(available on our website) that
surveyed 2000 members
views on these trends and how
they can change their ways for
sustainable living and to
reduce their impact on the
environment.
The next phase of 90@90 involves
practical earth-saving projects organised
by the NFWI. One of the first project we’re
launching is the EcoTeam programme in
partnership with Global Action Plan
(GAP).
Through 90@90 we hope to launch a
series of practical projects to help our
members understand and change their
ways in regards to energy, transport,
waste and food waste. Other projects
we are planning are a project to reduce
car use with Carplus, the monitoring of
energy use with Dynamic Demand and
plans to train people about compost

Previously my work
has been unrelated
to the climate change
issue – having been
involved in coporate
HR projects and
change
management.
I am involved in writing a community engagement
strategy for the Three Dales area – a former mining
community in north-west Staffordshire.
I am particularly interested in attracting the attention of
16-25 year-olds, who are more difficult for us to
communicate with since they are out of school (and are,
thus, no longer a captive audience) and aren’t the age
range that tend to attend community meetings.
We want to involve and interest people more in their
local environment and, through this, raise awareness of
climate change issues.
The outcomes of the community
engagement conference were
particularly helpful in terms of an
initial guide and what I should be
thinking about in terms of forming
strategy.
I hope to come up with something
that includes a wide range of
actors.

The Wasteless Society originated
as a waste management group
undertaking simple recycling. It
grew to develop green waste
collection systems linked to
anaerobic digestion and biogas
production. This activity waxes
and wanes. Aim has been to only
deliver things that local authorities
were not able or willing to do with
a view to moving them to the
mainstream. Local authority now
has the finest UK example of AD
processing households wastes
and has taken on plastics
recycling etc.
Unhappy with the limited impact of recycling
we have moved in to energy as an indicator of
irresponsible use of resources. 2004
undertook UK first Community Climate
Change Strategy based on carbon
footprinting. Based on this developed UK’s
first 100% biodiesel forecourt sales and now
trials (under EST support) an ESCo – energy
performance within the domestic sector as the
one area NOT being properly tackled by either
government or industry.
To develop the ESCo from simple energy
performance to development of renewable
energy in properties.
The Wasteless Society has
agreed that it will not only seek
to develop profit making
enterprises that allow it to
remain in business and
independent …..
…. But we will also seek, wherever
possible, to freely share our experiences
and ideas with other communities that
request it.

To seek to develop additional renewable
energy sources to meet the outstanding

Bring in enterprises that tackle issues such
as food and transport. For example the
biogas plant is to be developed so that
surplus heat goes to polytunnels and a
portion of the gas is used as a transport
fuel.

CURRENT WORK
PLANS FOR FUTURE WORK
Much depends on outcome of current
reflection. However, I am particularly
interested in:
- Promotion of community action
on climate change in Wiltshire,
including how to snowball
successful initiatives
- Development of training/learning
programme to support
community action. What skills do
people need?
- More work outside Wiltshire, to
share what we have
learnt/widen impact, and learn
ourselves. Consultancy,
training?

Energy Efficiency Campaign to reduce
domestic energy use by a third. Marches
Energy Agency have devised software for
us to calculate carbon footprint of a
household, and how this can be reduced
by a variety of measures, including the
potential cost saving on bills. Aim to
survey all 1327 households in Llanidloes.
This survey is about to start, LLES
members have volunteered to help.
PLANS FOR FUTURE WORK
Generate biogas from bio waste at the
local landfill site, clean it to match
domestic heating gas, put it into gas
main for use in the town. Green gas,
instead of green electricity.
Also run a hydrogen demonstration
plant along side the AD plant to develop
H as a fuel and ‘hythane’ (a mix of H
and methane) as a fuel also.
Promote wood fuel heating where
possible as replacement for oil,
especially in the commercial sector.
Use CHP and wood boiler to heat
swimming pool, run heatmain to provide
schools, retail premises and 2 old
people’s homes with heat.
