Welcome!
Welcome to our American history curriculum! This history curriculum was originally
written for the target age of eight to nine (3rd grade) but can easily be used and adapted
for other grades and ages. The easiest grades to adapt for and use our curriculum in are
2nd-6th grades. It is also an excellent supplement to any other history curriculum (for
a variety of ages) with plenty of "gravy" like worksheets, printables, links, extra reading,
crafts, activities and more.
Our American history curriculum uses a literature (“living-books”) and "semi" unit study
approach; whenever possible tying in other disciplines such as science, language arts and
more. Our main focus though is on history.
This history curriculum is FREE to anyone who needs or wants it. Please consider it our
gift to you from OurLosBanos.com in honor of the many blessings God has bestowed
upon our family. If you use and like our materials, we ask that you will consider making
a donation or an Amazon.com order via our donation page and/or book links. Please also
tell your friends or link to us!
Hours and hours of research and love went into this project and continue to go into it as
we tweak it to be more user-friendly and content-rich. We look forward to hear what you
think of it! Please visit our forums to leave your comments, questions or ideas! Or you
can send us an email. Feedback is really encouraging and appreciated, so please don't be
shy!
Although our curriculum is mean to be used over the course of a year or so, you can also
easily independently use each individual topic as a unit study or to supplement any other
curriculum that focuses on American history.
You can choose to use it topic-wise (no set schedule), or you can use our “daily”
schedule if you need or want more “guidance”. No matter how you decide to use our
curriculum, it should be thought of as very flexible and adaptable. Don’t be afraid to
change it, skip some of it, add to it or tweak it!
Enjoy!

Some Thoughts to Share and an Introduction:
I have been homeschooling for over fifteen years and have used, tried out and seen
lots of curriculums. Hardly any of them have fit us perfectly and so I have tweaked some,
added to others and sometimes had to just "walk away" and not use a few! When 20062007 rolled around, I wanted something totally tailored to my youngest child for his study
of American history. I decided to write my "own" curriculum.
My writing this history curriculum was an attempt at providing my son with a terrific
foundation and whetting his appetite for more. I wanted him to not just love what he is
studying, but to retain some of it too! That makes his job easier when he gets into the
higher grades to understand things even further and not have to waste time trying to
piece the big parts together, because we will have already built the "frame" early on. In
writing this, it is also my hope to share it with you and others, so that your children too
can learn what my son learned and hopefully learn to love history as much as we do!
I designed this schedule to ensure my youngest son really grasps the "flow" of
American history and also retains major events and persons for a stronger foundation to
work off of later. I also wanted to provide him with a study that "works" for us in various
ways other curriculums haven't.
The other American history curriculum(s) I am aware of have some terrific books, but
they either have books scheduled together that don't mesh "time-wise", or are in my
opinion too "advanced", making it harder to retain the material. Also, some of the
curriculums (again in my opinion), don't have "enough" books and / or information to
flesh things out. Some are also lacking in the hands-on and crafts department.
These issues are important to me and so I have kept them in mind while writing my
American history curriculum.
Also, you should know we are a Christian family and this curriculum will reflect our
beliefs and values in some of the discussion questions, etc.
I will "warn" you if I think an item scheduled has potentially objectionable material (from a
Christian standpoint) and I will many times provide discussion questions or Bible verses
that I (and I am certainly not infallible) think pertain to certain issues we come across in
the materials. Also (for those of you who care about this sort of thing), please note, I
have NOT gone through each and every one of the materials!! I have looked over or
used most of it, but everything is to be used at your own discretion.
If you would like to help me develop questions or if a certain verse comes to mind
when you are going over a book or video, please share it with me! I would like to
consider adding it to the book notes.
Having said this, if you do not share my faith, you can just skip over my notes and
comments. History pertains to us all, of course. :-) This schedule contains nearly 100%
secular books with just a couple exceptions so it’s not a problem for those of you who
would like to avoid a “Christian flavor”. For those of you who would like more of a
Christian emphasis, I suggest you add in your own personal Bible studies for the year
and take a peek at the notes I’ve written about specific titles. :-) I hope you enjoy sharing
this journey with us!

Books and Materials
In choosing the books and materials for this topic of study, I included favorites
from previous years of teaching my older children and also added in "new" books
that I think will be helpful, interesting, fun and contribute to our study of American
history.
I have found these books through a variety of sources: by looking through books
personally at the library, book reviews on various sites (such as Amazon.com)
and multiple sites such as: Literature to Supplement History (where you can find
an excellent list of books)! I’ve looked over and read many of these books and
watched many of the movies, but there are some books that we didn’t get around
to reading and some movies we didn’t have the time for.
There are thousands of good books for American history. Don't feel roped into
"my" choices. They are listed as a guideline only. If you see a book that you think
would be better, please use it. If your child wants to get off on a tangent, then let
him (within reason and your judgment!). Maybe your daughter really likes Native
American stories, or your son books about the Revolution. If so, then add those
books and perhaps take out some others.
If you can't locate a book on the list, don't sweat it. Find an appropriate
substitution and use that instead. You will most likely not get to "all" of the books
listed. In fact, I’m sure you won’t. We certainly didn’t! My plans were ambitious,
but we really like a heavy amount of reading
Book Baskets
and I've found that my kids enjoy going more
in depth. Sometimes a book will "repeat" some A book basket is a container (basket, box,

fine and learning plenty.
Some notes about the movies chosen:
Most of the videos and DVD's I've chosen are what's available at a library we
frequent. I believe that "seeing" things really adds to a study (the more ways you
can get facts "into" kids, the better they will remember). My kids really enjoy the
5
videos I schedule. Videos, for us, are a sort of a "treat" because we make a habit
of not watching too much T.V. (not having cable helps that out). DVD’s and
videos are usually saved for the end of the day when everyone is done with work
and studying!
I haven't seen all of the scheduled videos, but I have seen many that are
produced by same company (most of the videos are Schlessinger videos) and
they are pretty good for kids (short, easy to understand, etc.).
Some notes about History Pockets:
I have scheduled four History Pockets books. In my estimation they are not "all"
be necessary. I just happened to have them all. Two of the books are specifically
for K-3rd grade (Native Americans and Pilgrims). Two others are for 4th-6th
grade (Explorers and Colonial). I have looked them all over and think the 4th-6th
grade books are, in my opinion, just fine for a 3rd grader to use.
If you are on a tight budget (or just don't want to do FOUR History Pockets
books), I would recommend the Native Americans book (as this is the first 7
topics of this study) and then either the Pilgrims book (you can spread it out over
the colonial topics if you wish) or the Colonial America book. The book on
explorers is the most "optional" for this study, but useful as your child will
probably come across the names mentioned in it again. If you plan on using
WinterPromise’s American Story 2 next year, you will want to SKIP the History
Pockets Moving West book.
You can click on the links of each History Pockets title to go directly to the EvanMoor site and look at each and every page of the books, if you wish. This should
help you choose which books are most appropriate for your child (if you want to
do the History Pockets at all).
I like History Pockets because they make a really nice portfolio, the kids enjoy
working on them (and reviewing their work by looking through them later); they
retain what they learn from them, and they add "fun" activities to our studies. In a
couple cases, I have provided alternative books that are similar but may be a
nice change or more fun depending on your family’s taste.

Overview of Books and Materials
Please visit our website at
http://www.ourlosbanos.com/homeschool/history/booksandmaterialslist.html
to see a more detailed list of all books, DVD’s, etc. (with pictures, reviews and
comments) used this year as well as convenient links to Amazon.com.
The table below shows what week a resource is started and what week it is
finished. Note that you may not use the resource for the entire duration of those
weeks. In other words you may skip some of the “in between” weeks if a
resource is used more than one week.
Books with an asterisk are considered more optional than the other books listed.
Put them in your book basket for extra reading, or choose them if you prefer
them or they are easier to locate. They will also add extra content for a voracious
reader. Videos, DVD’s, CD’s, computer games and activity books are always
considered optional. ;-)
Use this list to plan your trips to the library, figure out which books you'd like to
purchase and which books you'd like to skip or substitute.
If you are viewing this list in Microsoft Word, you may wish to highlight books and
videos different colors to help you sort through what you are using, etc.

Some Thoughts About the Week-by-Week Schedule
I have created this schedule at the request of some of the visitors to the site.
Please note that we did not follow this schedule ourselves. I originally created
this curriculum in a topic format. A topic format allows a much more flexible
feeling with all the items from a particular subject grouped together to be chosen
from as time and interest permit. A schedule has the benefit of helping people
“stay on track”, but sometimes there is a problem with that. Because something
is “scheduled” a parent may feel obligated to follow it and start feeling behind if
certain activities or books aren’t finished within the given framework. You can find
yourself bogged down or feeling like you just aren’t keeping up or feeling like a
“slave” to the schedule at the expense of other activities like math, language arts
and so on.
Everyone has a different style of homeschooling. Some of us are linear and need
to check boxes throughout the day or week to get things done and others of us
may tend to wander a bit – doing a lot of math during one day and then skipping
it completely the next. I must admit that I can be a mix of both! ;-)
If you are a “box-checker”, please do not feel like this schedule means you must
do every activity listed or read every book I’ve put in. Don’t let it “rule” you, but
rather “guide” you. Use it as a framework that you can feel free to customize,
change, tweak, etc.
That is exactly why I’ve created this schedule in a Word document. You can take
out items, put in others, delete entire columns and add in your own activities and
resources.
If you are going to print this schedule out, you may want to hole punch pages on
opposite sides so you have a spread from left to right in your notebook. That way
you will be able to see the entire week in one glance.
This schedule ends after 34 weeks and that should give you a couple weeks
wiggle-room in the traditional 36-week public school schedule.
Please send me an email (homeschooler@OurLosBanos.com) and let me know
if you have any questions or comments!
Even though this curriculum and schedule are free, please do not post them on
your website, blog, etc. If you’d like to let others know about them, please link to
our site. :-)
We don’t want anyone to feel at all obligated, but if you wish to donate to our site
or purchase books through Amazon, please refer to:
http://www.OurLosBanos.com/homeschool/donate.html.
I hope you have fun with your year!

Use the Teacher’s Guide for maps on pages 4 and 12 to label the following mentioned in the Wayne Drop
storybook (science):
Orlando, Turkey Lake, Lake Kissimmee, Kissimmee River, Lake Okeechobee, Coloosahatchee River, St.
Lucie River, Palm Beach Canal, Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, Fort Myers, San Carlos Bay,
Alligator Alley, Miami, Tamaimi Trail, Shark River Slough, Florida Bay and Florida Keys
(Answers are provided –You can either hand out the copy with the answers and color in parts, or hand out
the blank copy and have it labeled depending on time constraints/interest).
You may also want to point out where Cape Canaveral is (and let your child know that is where NASA is
located), Disney World and any other cities or places of interest (use an atlas).
Timeline notes: Seminole Wars 1835-1858
(Emphasize as you put this into the timeline that this was the period of time that Night Bird’s family was
hiding and then moved to Oklahoma. Paste a picture of the book cover in).
Science notes: Use The Journey of Wayne Drop to the Everglades (Interactive Storybook) OR (maybe
even in addition to)
Download the PDF version of the story above (learn not only about the water cycle but also about Florida’s
lakes, rivers, animals and more). The PDF is nice because at the end of the story it shows satellite image
maps with areas mentioned marked AND there is a fun game at the end to play.
Teacher’s Guide for Wayne Drop book: Use whichever lessons interest you (watershed, water cycle, food
chains and food webs, bird “adaptations” (or rather how God created them to be), native and exotic species
in the everglades and much more. There are hands-on activities, vocabulary, some writing, experiments,
links to multimedia and more.
Website notes: My son was curious as to how hominy was originally made and the hominy article explains
the process (I read parts of it out loud to him). We do NOT recommend this as a project due to the use of
lye.

Picture writing printable worksheet A "hide" on the first sheet has all sorts of picture writing symbols on it.
The 2nd sheet has "blank hides" so you can write your own story out of symbols. This would be a good
time to talk about other forms of picture writing -how the Egyptians used it and how Chinese characters
came from pictures, etc. Ask your child why writing with pictures would get pretty cumbersome after
awhile (because you'd have to remember "pictures" for everything vs. the 26 letters of our alphabet with
some 70 or so sound combinations, etc.)
The Nez Perce raised horses so I've found some horse activities to go along with this topic!
Horse Story Worksheet Use this to write a story about a horse or about Kaya.
Horse dot-to-dot: This dot-to-dot is pretty simple. My son likes dot-to-dots though and so I decided to
include it.
Appaloosa Coloring Book: Color the pictures of the appaloosas (or paint them) for your notebook. Write
some facts on the back from an encyclopedia, book or online.

Map notes: Ptolomy's Map Print out this map created by Ptolomy for your child's notebook. Use it to show
how people thought the world was much smaller than it really is. Compare the map to a modern map or
globe. What's missing from Ptolomy's map?
Notebooking notes: A ship to cut, paste and put together (flat for notebooking) This will help with ship
vocabulary and is also fun to try and figure out how the pieces go. Look up ships online or in a book as a
reference if you wish.
Teacher’s guide PDF which includes (all activities below are totally optional based on if you have the time
and interest): Santa Maria see-inside view (with ship vocabulary labels), Hardtack and 1500’s bean soup

Science notes: If you watch the Secrets of Lost Empires DVD, you may want to do this fun activity: "Hang
in There" (after viewing the segment where they build a bridge from twisted grass). Build a suspension
bridge out of newspaper strips and experiment with ways to make it stronger.
Craft notes: Cut out the Aztec puppets. When you are done playing with them, put them in a pocket in
your history notebook!
Timeline notes: 1.Ponce de Leon landed in Florida in 1513, Balboa saw the Pacific Ocean in 1513,
Magellan’s crew sailed around the world 1519-1522
2. Cortes conquered Mexico 1521 Montezuma (leader of the Aztecs), Pizzarro attacked the Incas in Peru
1532
Extras notes: Listen to some panpipe music when you get to the part where the minstrel is visiting Cusi
and Chuto. I recommend the site linked above that has free streaming music and is a pleasant introduction
to panpipes.
