The instructor can be available for appointments 30 minutes prior to and after class time.

meeting date.
COURSE CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
Proper management plays a crucial role in the efficient execution and completion of
projects. In this introductory course, project management principles, processes and “best
practices” as embodied in the Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide and other
sources are discussed leading to the development of a solid project management plan.
Applicability and scalability of the processes in practice are also deliberated. Emphasis is
on the technical aspects of project management, such as Project Charter, Scope
Statement, Work Breakdown Structure, Project Schedule, Critical Path Method, Cost
Baseline, Earned Value Status Reporting and Risk Response Plan, which cover the basic
building blocks for more advanced courses, like Planning and Controlling, and Risk
Management. Behavioral aspects of project management are touched lightly and are more
extensively covered in the Human Factors and Team Dynamics for Project Management
course.
OVERALL OBJECTIVE:
This course is intended to provide the basic concepts and processes associated with
project management.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of this course, the student will understand the role of the project
manager, organizational structures, the environment surrounding project management,
project management processes as embodied in the Project Management Body of
Knowledge Guide, and be able to prepare a project plan that contains the following
elements:
 Map of project lifecycle phases with product process deliverables and project
management processes deliverables
 Scope baseline (Scope Statement and Work breakdown structure)
 Stakeholder Analysis
 Schedule baseline
 Cost baseline
 Communication plan
 Responsibility Assignment Matrix
 Risk Response Plan w/ Risk Types

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION AND COURSE PROCESS:
This class is taught by lecture, case studies, problem sets, class discussion, and the
development of student projects. Participation in discussions is highly encouraged. The
development of a project plan will be required and comprise a major portion of the final
grade. Questions and discussions relating to students’ personal business experience are
also encouraged.

COURSE PROTOCOL:
Attendance Policy: The student is expected to attend all classes. Exceptions will be
handled on an individual basis.
Make-Up Policy: Missed classes may require additional assignments, including written
material to be turned in and/or examinations. Make-up examinations may differ from
original exams.
Late Homework Assignments and Late or Make-Up Quizzes: Delivery of homework
assignments after the due date will result in a maximum 85% credit. Late or make-up
quizzes will also result in a maximum of 85% credit.
