Here are the essay writing topics for my First Certificate Class.
-First Certificate Essay 1
Read the following task and then write your answer in 120-180 words. Use the
language of agreeing and disagreeing and make sure you use correct punctuation.
You have been asked to write an article for an English language newspaper aimed at
parents with young children. Your article should be a response to the following
statement:
Foreign languages should be taught at nursery school level.

if you are going to write a formal or informal letter and stick to the style.
Some young people you met last summer are planning to visit your country on
holiday and have asked you to suggest some places of interest to see. Write a letter

Tell a friend about a concert you have been to recently or have seen on TV. Give

Key facts:
Include all the important factual information provided in the document. USE YOUR
OWN WORDS.
Paragraphing:
Each paragraph should have a clear topic and purpose. The first sentence should
say why you are writin, the final sentencde should make clear to the reader what you
expect to happen next.
Style:
This is a formal letter, so start with Dear Sir or Madam and end with Yours faithfully.
A group of foreign students is visiting your town next month. You have been asked to
write a letter inviting them to a ‘Welcome evening’ at your school. Read the
Director’s memo and the notes you have made. Then write a letter to Tom Wilde, the
leader of the group, covering all the director’s points and including the information in
your note.

Thieves strike while bride dances
Two men posing as wedding guests strolled into the Mill Hotel last Saturday and stole
itmes from a display of wedding presents.
The theft occurred while the bride and groom were dancing and chatting to guests.
No one realized that anything was wrong until the end of the evening when the
bride's mother, Mrs Pamela Hill, found a number of empty boxes.
The police were called and after they had arrived some of the guests were asked to
write descriptions of their wedding presents.
Write your own description of something that is of great value to you. Include the

writing, often based on research of some kind. The style is susally formal and
impersonal, so the writer's opinions are not necessarily included. Reports should
have a clear layout. An informative title is useful, and sub-headings can be used to

You have a part-time job at the local zoo. As the council is threatening to clse the
zoo, you have recently conducted a survey among people in your area, to find out
thier views. Write a report, in 120-180 words, on the results of your survey to send to
the council.
