The 29th Annual Book Report Competition For Secondary School Students Class: 3A Name: Wong Chak Daren Title: Katie Kazoo Switcheroo, Free the Worms! Author: Nancy Krulik Publisher: Penguin Group The name of this book is called “Katie Kazoo Switcheroo, Free the Worms!”. The author of this book is Nancy Krulik. I had chosen this book because the cover of this book is about school life and reptiles. I am interested in learning reptiles. The main theme of this story was the problems caused by the magic wind. Katie was affected by the magic wind and she was the one who needed to solve the problems. The main characters of this story are Katie, a kind girl, Mr. G., a teacher of class 4B and George, Jeremy and Kelvin, the members of the band. This story began in the house of Katie. Katie’s puppy was barking at the squirrel on the tree. In the middle part of the story, magic winds are mentioned. The magic wind turned Katie into snakes, puppy and a security guard. To end up the story, the band was broken apart and Katie made a T-shirt for the band and three bandmates finally made it up. I think the part of Katie was turned to Slinky, a snake in class 4A by the magic wind was the most interesting part of the story. Katie wanted to stay in the classroom and draw a picture of Slinky to make Mr. G. to be happier. Katie found that the view of Slinky was blocked by a wood. As there were no people in the classroom, she took Slinky out of the cage. When she was taking Slinky out of the cage, she felt a strong wind blowing to her and the wind was so horrible and annoying. She turned into Slinky. Katie turned back to herself before Mr. G. was back. Unfortunately, Slinky disappeared. Lastly, Katie and Mr. G. found Slinky in a backpack. I thought this book was very educational. It taught me to respect lives. In the story, Mr. G. asked the students to pick up worms on the floor to feed Slinky but Katie ignored Mr. G. because she thought the worms had their own lives and should not be eaten by Slinky. I learnt from Katie. No matter how the lives are small we still need to respect them and don’t kill them. Although Katie hated the slippery and muddy worms, she still paid her effort to protect the little worms. This book was also meaningful. To make the best happen, I should cooperate with the others that I learnt from this book. Just like in a band, no one can be neglected. Every member of a band is important as all of the bandmates playing different instruments. If someone is neglected in the band, the piece of music played by the band will not be perfect enough. I liked this book as Mr. G. taught a lot about reptiles and I learnt the habitat and the characteristics of most of the reptiles especially snakes. Snakes shed when they grow up. Their new skin will change to a bigger and fitter size of the snakes. The most suitable food for snakes is worms and snakes eat worms in the nature. I didn’t like three students in this book. They are George, Jeremy and Kelvin grouping a rock music band as I didn’t like listening to rock music. As they were only children, they couldn’t play good music. I suggested that they could learn more from their music teacher because their performance was not well. If I was the author, I would like to add a new main character to this story. I thought Katie was lonely in school. She stayed in the classroom alone to draw a picture of Slinky. Therefore, I thought a friend should be added to Katie. So, this friend could play with Katie. If I had a chance to spend a day with one of the character in the story, I would choose Mr. G. because I thought he was clever. He thought of a solution to find Slinky and he was a teacher teaching science. I thought we would gather in a coffee shop and discuss how he could become a teacher. He could BE calm when facing problems. This book reminds me that I need to cooperate with others in group work. We should respect the right of other lives. In conclusion, this book is full of funny characters and has the unthinkable plot. I have learnt a lot of features of reptiles in this book.
