Curriculum Vitae (2014) Mr. Jonathan Spilsbury, MBBS (Middlesex Hospital London) 1987, FRCS (Eng.) 1991, FRCS (Orth.) 1996 Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon, The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital & Birmingham Children’s Hospital Honorary contracts at: The Cromwell Hospital London Priory Hospital Birmingham Golden Jubilee Hospital Glasgow Medico-legal Experience Orthopaedic/ trauma reporting since 1992, specialist spinal reporting since 1996, Spinal Negligence reporting since 2000 Patients seen in Birmingham, Manchester and London As an Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, I work as a member of a team of eight spinal surgeons. Between us, we cover all aspects of spinal pathology. In my practice, I run an adult low back pain clinic once per week, treating both low back pain and sciatica. In this clinic, I also see patients with adult 1 degenerative scoliosis. In my paediatric clinic, I see patients with spinal deformity, and run a weekly spinal deformity clinic with two colleagues. My Paediatric spinal surgery is spread over two sites, Birmingham Children’s Hospital and The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. My operating experience includes two whole days of operating per week. This is roughly split into 70% spinal deformity- mainly paediatric and 30% adult degenerative cases. On top of this, I have an on-call commitment, providing oncall advice and emergency surgery for all aspects of spinal pathology except for intra-dural pathology. I attend weekly interdisciplinary meetings to discuss on-call referrals, elective surgery performed by all my colleagues, as well as interesting non-operative cases. I run a weekly teaching programme for teaching spinal pathology to registrars and SHOs in the hospital, as well as teaching sessions for medical students and the East Midlands Orthopaedic Training Programme. I attend the British Scoliosis Society meetings regularly, as well as alternate Scoliosis Research Society meetings and consecutive Britspine meetings. I have recently been an adviser to NICE. Low back pain work includes decompression, fusion surgery, occasional disc replacements (where indicated) as well as supervising (and occasionally performing) an injection list and multi-disciplinary team meetings with the pain team. I have no experience in laser surgery, percutaneous nuclear replacements or cervical disc replacement surgery. In spinal deformity, I treat all ages of spinal deformity. I have extensive experience with VEPTR, growing rod systems, vertebrectomies, osteotomies, as well as anterior thoracic and anterior lumbar surgery in both spinal deformity surgery and adult degenerative surgery. I regularly treat spinal metastasis surgically, but do not treat primary bone tumours alone. I have an interest in coccydynia, which I believe is a maligned condition in the UK. 2 House Surgeon House Surgeon House Physician Anatomy Prosector Senior House Officer Surgery Senior House Officer Career Registrar Orthopaedics, University College Hospital, London.
