in interviewing children, suspected child sex offenders and the investigation
of offences against children and vulnerable persons. Master of Science
degree in ‘Child Forensic Studies: Psychology and Law.' Honorary
Secretary of British Association for the Study and Prevention of Child
Abuse and Neglect (BASPCAN).Associate tutor for the Central Police
Training and Development Authority. Ex Detective Inspector
Course outline:
The aims of this 2 day course are to enhance and develop the skills and abilities of social workers
to engage with clients/customers, conduct effective interviews and carry out thorough and
professional enquiries/investigations.
Transferable skills from policing adapted to meet the role of the social worker will result in the
following learning outcomes:
 identify the principles of investigation;

explain the correct approach to carry out thorough and professional investigations, including
risk assessment;

describe how the memory stores information and factors affecting the retrieval of
information;

identify alternative interviewing methods and techniques required for different interviewees;

explain how to engage with persons and build rapport;

conduct interviews in accordance with the PEACE/conversation management structure;
Who should attend:
The course will assist social workers in their work under Section 17 of the Children Act 1989 and
the completion of assessments. It will be of particular benefit where the local authority has a duty to
investigate under Section 47 of the Act.
