Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1.

What is GSU Campus Talkers?

GSU Campus Talkers is an officially chartered club of Toastmasters International, a nonprofit organization designed to help people improve their communication and leadership skills. Campus Talkers was chartered on May 1, 2000 and membership in our Club is open to GSU students. Campus Talkers meets year-round on most Wednesdays from

12:30 to 1:15 p.m. in 609CS (Classroom South) on the GSU downtown campus.

2.

How much does it cost and what do I get for my money?

Membership in GSU Campus Talkers is an affordable $74 per year ($37 every six months) and new members pay a one-time fee of $20. As a new member, you will receive a Toastmasters Communication and Leadership Program manual; brochures to help you reach your full potential as a speaker; a subscription to The Toastmaster, a monthly publication packed with communication and leadership tips; and better communication skills—all for less than $1.50 a week!

3.

How does Campus Talkers work?

Think of Toastmasters as a learn-by-doing workshop where you can develop your communication skills in a friendly and supportive environment. There is no instructor, there are no grades, and there are no tests! You learn how to communicate by watching, listening, and practicing; and by helping others improve their skills. Members begin their journey toward better speaking by delivering 10 speeches—from the Communication & Leadership Program manual—each designed to develop effective speaking skills, one step at a time.

4.

What goes on at a Campus Talker meeting?

At a Campus Talkers’ meeting, everybody talks – that’s why we’re there! Our meetings provide members with plenty of opportunities to polish their communication skills. Members conduct the meeting, introduce speakers, perform roles, provide constructive evaluation, use “quick thinking” skills to share impromptu answers, and deliver prepared speeches. We meet for just one hour a week, but the skills we develop will last a lifetime.

5.

How will I improve?

You will improve your ability to communicate by watching, listening, and speaking regularly; but the key to your improvement will be constructive evaluation. When you deliver a prepared speech, an experienced speaker will evaluate your speech. After your speech, the evaluator will provide you with valuable suggestions for how to improve your next speech. You will also develop your leadership skills when you assume a meeting role, manage a project, or serve as a Club officer. The sky is the limit once you establish your goals for personal improvement.

6.
