QUIT AND WIN 2010
Date as postmark
Dear colleague
QUIT & WIN 2010
Thank you for your interest in our annual give up smoking competition.
Quit & Win 2010 will begin on Wednesday 10th March (No Smoking
Day) and run for a total of 12 weeks. At the end of weeks 4, 8 and 12
there will be a prize draw for all the participants who have remained
smoke free.
The enclosed Co-ordinator’s pack outlines how to run the competition in
your workplace. If you wish your workplace to take part please return the
registration form to me by Monday 8th March 2010. Dates for return of
participants forms will be by Friday 12th March thus giving them time to
sign up on No Smoking Day.
Previous experience of the competition has shown that the quitters’
success rates are very good and this may be due to the support received
from colleagues. If you have several people taking part in the competition
it is a good idea to pair them up to act as buddies for each other.
If you have any questions about the competition please do not hesitate to
contact me.
Yours Sincerely
Maria Osuji
Health Improvement Practitioner

Fact Sheet: Quit’s Email Counselling
QUIT's Email Counselling service is run by qualified and experienced QUIT
counsellors who offer confidential, non-judgemental advice, information
and support. Quit counsellors work daily from 9am to 9pm and will usually
reply on the same day.
QUIT is designed to help people stop smoking
Including:



Those who are thinking about stopping smoking
Those who may have already stopped and need ongoing support
Those helping someone else to stop smoking
Personal support
QUIT can certainly provide some general information about stopping
smoking, but remember, everybody is different and counselling is most
effective when meeting your individual needs. Therefore it helps if you can
tell QUIT about yourself and why you have contacted them. For example,
if you are thinking about stopping smoking, it is helpful to know:






How long you have been smoking
How many you smoke per/day
Why you smoke
Why you want to stop
Have you tried to quit before
If so, what method you used and for how long you stopped
If you are worried about some particular aspect of smoking or stopping
smoking (e.g. health risks, weight gain, withdrawal symptoms), it would
also help for you to try and tell QUIT what is bothering you so that they
can address your personal concerns. QUIT counsellors may from time to
time also ask further questions to clarify your circumstances so they can
help in the most appropriate way for you.
Who is the email counselling service for?
Email counselling may suit those who:





Are unable or prefer not to access face to face counselling services
Find talking about personal matters easier via email than on the
telephone
Are concerned about being overheard
Find email correspondence suits their lifestyle or working hours
Enjoy taking their time to prepare their thoughts
QUIT AND WIN 2010

Are trying to sort out their feelings and want to try counselling for
the first time
So if this sounds like a service that could help you, contact
stopsmoking@quit.org.uk for free advice and support by email.
Alternatively, if you wish to speak to a QUIT counsellor, call the
Quitline on 0800 00 22 00, daily from 9am to 9pm.

Guidance on preparing to stop
It’s never too late to stop smoking. Even people who have smoked all
their lives will improve their health by stopping smoking
Benefits of Quitting
As soon as a person stops smoking, their body starts the process of
recovery and the health benefits begin.







After 20mins, blood pressure and pulse rate return to normal
Within 8 hrs nicotine and carbon monoxide levels in the blood are
reduced by half. Within a couple of days all nicotine by products will
be cleared from the body.
After 24hrs, carbon monoxide will be eliminated from the body.
Lungs start to clear out mucus and other debris. Breathing
improves as bronchial tubes relax. It takes 3-9 months for the
lungs to clear out the tar and mucus that have accumulated over
the years of smoking.
After 48hrs there is no nicotine left in the body. The ability to taste
and smell is greatly improved.
Between 2 – 12 weeks circulation improves and levels of oxygen in
the blood increase.
After 5 yrs the risk of a heart attack falls to about half of that of a
smoker
After 15 yrs the risk of getting many of diseases caused by smoking
is about the same level as someone who has never smoked.
Stopping smoking
Stopping smoking is a difficult thing to do. One of the main reasons is
because of nicotine. Nicotine is the highly addictive drug in cigarettes and
it is this addictive nature that makes it difficult to quit.
When you quit smoking your body no longer gets the nicotine it has
become used to and you may suffer withdrawal symptoms.
To quit smoking successfully you need to be strongly motivated
and really want to be a non-smoker. Nicotine Replacement
Therapy or Zyban® can help take the edge off the
withdrawals from nicotine. Group Support or one to one support
will also help you in your attempt to give up smoking. Stopping
smoking can be made easier with NRT/Zyban® and support, but
your determination, effort and commitment are vital.
QUIT AND WIN 2010
Seven steps to Quitting – You’re in control
Countdown: The key to successful quitting is to plan and prepare to stop.
Follow these seven simple steps and call yourself a non-smoker!
1.
Prepare to quit
Name a quit day, a few days or weeks away, when you think you will be
ready. Use the in-between days to prepare to quit.
2.
Reasons to quit
Make a list of your reasons for stopping and any reasons you might have
for continuing to smoke. Make sure you really want to quit this time.
3.
Keep a diary
Use a diary for a day or so to analyse your smoking habit. Make a note of
when you smoke, where and why you smoke. Once you’ve used your
diary for a few days you could try working at weakening your smoking
habit:

Don’t smoke at the usual times, especially in the morning

Never smoke in a pleasant place, e.g. stand up to smoke rather
than sit in a comfortable chair
4.
Coping strategies

Work out how you will cope in different smoking situations:




What will you do if someone offers you a cigarette?
What distractions and substitutes will you have for when the
cravings come?
Do you need to practise a relaxation exercise?
Will you need to arrange to be able to talk to a friend if the
going gets tough?
Write down your plans somewhere and keep motivated by looking at your
reasons for quitting.
5.
The night before
The night before quit day, have your last cigarette, but make sure you
don’t enjoy it. Smoke an old stale one or smoke out in the rain. Then get
rid of everything to do with smoking – your ciggies, ashtray, lighters and
matches.
QUIT AND WIN 2010
6.
Quit day
Think positive. You’ve made all your plans for coping, so put them into
action. Make a note of difficult times and rethink your plans if you need
to.

Drink lots of water or fruit juice and keep caffeine to a minimum

Change your routine – get up and do things in a different order.
Sit in a different place to eat breakfast. Drink juice instead of
tea or coffee.

Sit in a different chair to watch TV. Sing along with the radio in
the car instead of smoking.

At the end of the first day, reward yourself even if no-one else
does!

Spend your cigarette money on a treat and enjoy it – you
deserve it!
7.
Keep going
Repeat step six for as long as you need to. Take each day at a time.
Don’t think about being smoke-free for the next 20 years, just keep going
for the next 24 hours.
If you do relapse, don’t panic. Forget about feeling guilty – you were in a
tough situation. Instead, get rid of any cigarettes you might have, learn
from the experience and plan what you will do next time in that situation.
Start calling yourself a non-smoker – BECAUSE YOU ARE!
QUIT AND WIN 2010
What help is available to stop smoking?
In Glasgow, there is lots of help for people who want to stop smoking.
This section provides you with information about what is available and
where.
Stop Smoking Groups
In Glasgow, stop smoking groups are running across the city. The groups
run for 7 weeks in total and are held in local areas and the city centre.
The first 2 weeks are information sessions when you can decide if this is
the right time for you to give up. On week 3, everybody quits together
and weeks 4 to 7 are group support - an opportunity for quitters to share
how they are getting on - their ups and downs, coping mechanisms and
offer general encouragement.
The groups are very relaxed and informal and are run by 2 trained
facilitators. The groups are suitable for anyone who wants to give up and
heavier smokers find this intensive support extra helpful.
To find the nearest group to you please contact SmokeFree Services on
0141 201 9825 or email smoke free services at
smokinginfo@ggc.scot.nhs.uk
Smoke Free Pharmacy Services
In Greater Glasgow and Clyde, community pharmacists (chemists) across
the city are offering one to one support for smokers who want to stop. At
the moment, about half of all pharmacists are offering support. These
pharmacists can also directly supply Nicotine Replacement Therapy (in the
form of patches), which means you don’t need to go to your GP for a
prescription for NRT if you don’t want to. (The patches will be provided on
prescription and so you will only pay the cost of a prescription charge for
every 4 weeks supply of product. If you are exempt from prescription
charges, the product is free.)
What’s Involved: You will be asked to visit your pharmacist for 5-10 mins,
once a week for up to 12 weeks, at a time that suits both you and the
pharmacist. During this time the pharmacist and trained staff within the
pharmacy will provide you with lots of practical advice and support to help
you stop smoking.
For information about community pharmacists (chemists) providing stop
smoking support phone 0800 389 3210
Support from your GP practice
Many GP practices across the city are also providing one to one support
for people who want to stop smoking.
QUIT AND WIN 2010
Discuss your smoking with your GP. They can prescribe Nicotine
Replacement Therapy or Zyban® champix to people who want to stop
smoking. It is important to remember though, that these products are not
suitable for all people.
It is important that you also get support in stopping smoking. Your GP,
practice nurse or another person within your practice may provide stop
smoking support on a one to one basis. Ask your GP or at reception for
more information.
Other stop smoking support
There are also alternative therapies available, such as hypnotherapy and
acupuncture which may help you to quit smoking. At the moment, though,
nothing has been shown to be more effective than will power alone other
than Nicotine Replacement Therapy/Zyban® Champix and intensive
support.
If you wish to try one of the alternative therapies it is important you use a
registered practitioner. Alternative therapies/support which may have
some effect include:



Acupuncture: At the moment it seems that acupuncture only has
short lasting effects.
Physical activity/exercise: There are a number of reasons why
exercise can be helpful in quitting. Exercise can help prevent weight
gain, makes people feel good about themselves and can help people
stay smoke free in the long term.
Hypnotherapy: Hypnotherapy is widely promoted as a way to stop
smoking. It aims to weaken the desire to smoke or strengthen the
will to stop or by improving concentration. At the moment there is
not enough evidence to suggest that hypnotherapy is a good way to
stop smoking.
Telephone helplines
There are a number of telephone helplines you can call for advice and
support on stopping smoking.
Smokeline (Scotland), 12 noon – midnight, daily: 0800 84 84 84
