The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet
Act V
Scene I
 Romeo describes a dream in which he was dead, but Juliet kissed his lips and
breathed new life into him
 Balthasar tells Romeo that Juliet is dead
 Romeo writes a note to Montague and tells Balthasar he will return to Verona
 Romeo asks if there is a letter from Friar Lawrence for him, Balthasar says no
 Romeo goes to an apothecary to (a seller of drugs) buy poison so he can kill
himself
 The apothecary say that he has just the thing for him but that selling poison is
illegal (punishable by death)
 Romeo tell the apothecary that he is too poor to refuse the sale
 The apothecary agrees and gives Romeo the poison

Scene II
 Friar Lawrence speaks with Friar John, who he had sent to Mantua with a letter
for Romeo
 Friar John says that he was unable to deliver the letter because he was quarantined
in a house with the plague
 Friar becomes upset and realizes that no one will be there when Juliet wakes up
from her false death (he doesn’t know Romeo thinks Juliet is really dead)
 He plans to get Juliet from the tomb himself and sends another letter to Romeo to
tell him what has happened.

Scene III
 Paris is in the churchyard scattering flowers on Juliet’s grave
 Romeo enters with Balthasar saying he has come to get a valuable ring he had
given Juliet
 Paris recognizes Romeo as the person who murdered Tybalt
 Paris thinks that Romeo has come to harm the corpse of either Tybalt or Juliet
 In anger Paris attacks Romeo, they draw swords, Romeo kills Paris
 Romeo finds Juliet, kisses her, drinks the poison and dies
 Friar Lawrence arrives, and finds out from Balthasar that Romeo is in the tomb
 Friar finds Paris’ body and Romeo’s, just then Juliet wakes up
 Friar tells Juliet Paris and Romeo are dead and she must leave
 Juliet refuses, tries to kiss some poison off Romeo’s lips to kill herself, hearing
someone approaching she takes Romeo’s dagger and kills herself
 The watchmen are shocked and confused when the view the bloody scene
 Prince and Capulet enter and they discover the bodies of Romeo, Juliet and Paris
 Friar Lawrence tells the story of Romeo and Juliet’s secret marriage
 Balthasar gives the prince the letter Romeo had written to his father which
confirms the Friar’s story
 Prince scolds the Capulets and Montagues telling them the tragedy was a
consequence of their feud
 Capulet and Montague will end their fighting
 Montague says he will build a golden statue of Juliet and Capulet will place one
of Romeo beside her
