Al Grande Eastern Michigan University PHED 470: Assessment Dr. Faust Alternative/Authentic Assessment Rationale: The purpose in creating an alternative or authentic assessment in Taekwondo is to assess what the student knows cognitively about thee variety of skills in Taekwondo. My overall plan and design is specifically focused on the student’s understanding and recognition of critical cues involved in the sport. Students are to pick a skill in Taekwondo, research it, and create a poster with it that shows what the skill is and the cues that go with the skill. By using this assessment, I can see if students learned from previous lectures about the topic. The scoring rubric is specifically used to determine if the students did the project accurately. It bases the results on whether the students know what the proper cues are involved with a specific skill. In doing so, this assessment tests the student’s knowledge, reinforce their understanding about Taekwondo skills, and it also provides them with a project on which they have a choice about which topic or skill to research on. At the end, we will hang the posters around the wall of the classroom, so that each student gets to see each other’s posters as well as make them feel good that they have contributed in class. Directions: Grade Level: Grades 8-9th Materials: Authentic Assessment Rubric, magazines, newspapers, and construction paper. Duration: Two weeks This alternative assessment is designed to determine the student’s understanding and recognition of a Taekwondo skill. The students will be given two weeks to research, create, and laminate a poster that shows a Taekwondo skill. The students will sign up on a sign up sheet during the first week on a Taekwondo skill that they would like to research. Each student will have a different Taekwondo skill. See the sign up sheet. During the second week, students can use magazines, newspapers, or browse the internet to search for pictures about a specific skill. Students will then cut the picture if the picture is from a magazine or a newspaper, or copy the picture if from the Internet. The students will need to cite where they retrieved the picture from. The student will then paste the picture into construction paper or a poster and they will list all the cues that are associated with that specific Taekwondo skill that they chose. Students will also need to laminate the poster so that when we can hang the posters in the physical education classroom after the test. Students also need to turn in a copy of the references from which they gathered their information. There will be a required 3 references for this project. Teacher Directions: 1. First and foremost, tell students that this is a project on which they have a choice on what skill they want to analyze. 2. Tell the students that the posters will be displayed throughout the gymnasium upon completion of the project for others to see so they have to be creative, use color, and laminate the project. 3. Tell students they have two weeks to complete the project. 4. Direct the students to sign up on the sign up sheet their name and the skill they would like to research on week one. See the sign up sheet. 5. Tell the students on week two, they are to research through the internet, magazines, newspapers, or books the cues for the Taekwondo skill the chose. They are to list the cues that are associated with that skill. 6. Tell the students they are also going to cut a picture of that skill and paste it onto a poster or construction paper and list the cues that go along with that skill next to the picture. 7. Tell the students they also need to provide a sheet containing 3 references about the specific skill they chose and the citation for the picture. The references will be in APA format. 8. Use the assessment rubric to determine and grade the student’s performance and knowledge. Student Directions: 1. Students will have two weeks to finish the project. 2. Students will have the choice on what specific Taekwondo skill they want to research. They will sign up for a specific Taekwondo skill on the first week. 3. After the students have signed up, Students must research the topic and list the cues of that skill. 4. Students must also find a picture from a newspaper, magazine, book, or the Internet that they could copy or cut and paste into a poster or construction paper. 5. Be creative, use color and laminate the poster. 6. Turn in a reference sheet with 3 references on their specific skill including a reference citation for the picture.
