“Life in the Trenches” During World War I
World History
As we study the warfare that occurred during World War I, you might wonder to yourself, “What
would it have been like to fight in World War I?” In order to help us answer that question, over
the next few days you are going to ‘virtually experience’ World War I as a fighter in two ways:
1. We will spend one day in the computer lab doing a “Life in the Trenches” simulation on
the internet. As you do the simulation you will be answering pre-assigned questions.
2. After completing the simulation you will write an essay detailing what life in the trenches
was like as though you were there.
The combination of these two parts will make up a test grade. See below for more details.
Part I: “Life in the Trenches”---World War I Simulation

Getting to the Trench Site:

Once you are on the website, read the opening screen, then when you are ready to play
the game click on ‘start the game’ at the bottom of the screen.

3-PAGE WORKSHEET. TO DO THIS, CLICK ON THE UNDERLINED WORDS
AND PHRASES TO GET DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT THAT ISSUE.
4.
Once you have completed the “Life in the Trenches Simulation” you will be ready to
write your essay (SEE OTHER SIDE).

shorter or longer war for you, less or more bloody war for you, etc. and WHY? Also, after
having been a trench warfare fighter, would you recommend trenches to military planners in
future wars? Why or why not? Include picture.
