Appendix 2: South West Fife: 2010 Celebrating Fife Programme
2010 Year of Celebration Flagship Programme opportunities for participation
and engagement in the South West Fife Area
January- December 2010

The Cultural Equalities Programme
Lead Organisation: Fife Council Community Learning & Development working in
partnership with key equalities groups, services and organisations across all of Fife’s 7
Areas
A year long programme spread across Fife’s 7 Areas of exciting and engaging promotions,
projects and events designed to ensure that widest possible access to cultural opportunity
for all is achieved in 2010 and beyond, regardless of race, age, gender, sexual orientation
or ability. This will include Fife’s first ever Mela event - a celebration of events featuring
Fife’s disabled artists, performers and sportspeople – including the first Scottish Inter Area
Bowls Match for players with a learning disability, a new Scottish Netball Festival and
Badminton Challenge featuring disabled athletes from across the country. Specially
created events in the South West Area will also mark key calendar highlights for specific
groups, like, for example International Women’s Day.

Local Heroes
Lead Organisation: Fife Council Museums & Libraries
A year-long programme of inspiring exhibitions and events celebrating people with a
strong connection to Fife and the contribution they have made to the world, and
recognising the great efforts, energies, talents and skills of our day-to-day Community
Heroes. Banners will appear in community venues in South West Fife celebrating Fifers in
and from this area. In addition, throughout the year Fifers living in the South West Area will
be asked to tell the story of the special people who have made a difference to their lives.

Celebrating Fife Food
Lead Organisation - Fife Food Network
The Network will work collaboratively with local food projects in South West Fife as part of
the production of a ‘Fife Food Map’ - identifying sources of local produce and good food
experiences. The Food Network will also host a short series of local ‘Taster’ events to
promote these publications – and raise awareness of Fife’s unique, quality food resources
and heritage.

Creative Communities
Lead Organisation - The Arts & Theatres Trust Fife with the National Theatre of Scotland
Fife’s own Arts and Theatres Trust teams up with the National Theatre of Scotland to
undertake the most extensive ‘residency’ in the company’s history across a range of
different geographic areas and communities of interest and experience. Inspiring the
exploring and telling of Fife’s stories, this year long programme of creative work will see up
to 100 workshops and performances delivered in the South West Fife Area, culminating in
thrilling and moving theatrical events that will be made by, for and with, the people of Fife
in 2010.

‘Cultural Explorers 2010’
Lead Organisation - Fife Council Education Service
South West Fife School clusters, along with other schools from across Fife’s areas, will
engage in a series of innovative and exciting cross curricular cultural projects,
programmes and events throughout 2010. The project will afford young people the
opportunity to engage in many of the expressive arts outcomes and experiences of
Curriculum for Excellence. The final 2010 showcase event in November will provide the
ideal platform for staff and pupils to come together from across the Kingdom to celebrate
all the best elements of cultural life in Fife.

Fife Youth Twinning Connections
Lead Organisation: Fife Twinning Forum
This element of Celebrating Fife 2010 will present a Roadshow featuring short films
produced and introduced by young people from each of Fife’s twin towns, both in Fife and
abroad, depicting their life, culture, where and how they live, grow and develop. This
project seeks to involve young people from the South West Area towns of Dalgety Bay,
Aberdour, Culross along with young people from their ‘twin’ communities Engcongolweni
Corte Franca and and Veere.

February - March 2010

Fife Jazz Festival: 5th – 7th February 2010
Lead Organisation: Assembly Direct Ltd
An enhanced Jazz Festival will bring national and international stars to Fife in the first
weekend of February. Both cognoscenti and casual listeners will enjoy a range of over 20
different events and exciting, high quality concerts taking place in concert halls, theatres,
village halls and many unusual locations from St Andrews to Culross. A host of jazz styles
are covered across 3 packed days from Dixieland to electric blues; jump jive to cutting
edge. This is the Festival that gets Fife swinging.

Woodland Awakening: 6th February – 7th March 2010
Lead Organisation: Cambo Institute in partnership with West Fife Woodland Group and
Falkland Heritage Trust.
Valleyfield will be part of this first Flagship cultural event of 2010. As we emerge from the
dark winter months, it is set to rejuvenate the senses, create a hunger for the great
outdoors and celebrate a time when nature comes out of hibernation.
Beautiful snowdrop trails in three different woodland areas of Fife (Valleyfield, Cambo, and
Falkland) will be enhanced by guided tours, school events, creative workshops and a
shared ‘Dark Skies’ programme of planet and star gazing lectures from Edinburgh’s
Observatory.

April – September 2010

Sail to Walk: April – September 2010
Lead Organisation: Active Fife working with the Royal Yachting Association, Bums Off
Seats, the Fife Coast and Countryside Trust and local sailing clubs.
This exciting 2010 programme is designed to encourage wide and active enjoyment of
sailing on Fife’s sparkling waters and walking through the winding, beautiful coastal
pathways that our Kingdom is so famous for. Local sailing clubs will offer sailing taster
sessions, supported by the Royal Yachting Association, to be delivered hand-in-hand with
a broad programme of guided coastline walks for all ages.

The Official Scottish Motorshow: 22nd – 23rd May 2010
Lead Organisation: Knockhill Racing Circuit
This a ‘must see’ event for every motoring enthusiast, bringing together cars, cars and
more cars for two days all the latest models on display, jaw-dropping stunts on the track
and in the air, endless opportunities for drooling over the world’s fastest super cars, plus a
host of amazing sideshows and interactive events. A totally unique live action Motor Show.
June 2010

Culross Festival 4rd – 6th June 2010
Lead Organisation: The Royal Burgh of Culross Festival Committee
Over the years Culross Festival has built up an enviable reputation and now attracts
performances from the highest standard of artists. This weekend long sparkling Music and
Arts Festival of diverse entertainment has, since 1996, staged a professional outdoor
opera each summer in the gardens of Abbey House. Audiences are invited to bring picnics
and enjoy the unique outdoor experience of world class singers such as Eddi Reader and
Chris Holland performing in a beautiful historic setting of the gardens of 17th century
Culross Abbey House, home of Lord and Lady Bruce.
The highlight of the 2010 Festival will be a performance by Opera Project of Cosi Fan
Tutte, a comic opera with some questions over the meaning of love. With singers more
used to performing on the world's opera stages, the Culross Opera, unique in Scotland,
offers the opportunity for opera lovers and opera newcomers to enjoy Mozart's music.

Little Light: July to September 2010
Lead Organisation The Byre Theatre
This is a nationally innovative, moving and enchanting theatre and storytelling installation
featuring an entrancing design and soundscape that will capture the imagination of babies,
infants and their grown-ups alike. Produced by the Byre Theatre the production will tour
around the Kingdom, bringing wonder and enchantment to the lives of our littlest Fifers in
South West Area nurseries and other exciting small people-friendly venues.

The British Superbike Championship: 24th – 25th July 2010
Lead Organisation: Knockhill Racing Circuit
This is the leading motorcycle racing championship in the UK – and YOU are invited!
Superbikes are 180mph race bikes with factory teams and some of the best riders in the
world. An eye-popping spectacle of excitement and vroom on 2 wheels!

Fife Outdoor Access Festival: 31st July – 8th August 2010
Lead Organisation: Fife Coast and Countryside Trust
Summer heralds an exciting series of over 50 events Fife wide to explore our beautiful
outdoors, including family activities, walks, cycling, disabled rambles, horse rides and
water based activities, some of which will roll out across the South west Fife area. There
is definitely something for everyone.
August 2010

World Championship Sidecar Grand Prix: 14th – 15th August 2010
Lead Organisation: Knockhill Racing Circuit
The first ever Grand Prix to be held in Scotland will attract 24 teams from around the globe
to compete in this unbelievable spectacle. Featuring alongside this prestigious
Championship, a full supporting programme of motorcycle racing and entertainment that
will be televised through Europe

Blooming Fife September 2010
Lead Organisation: Fife Council Parks and Countryside
A range of highest quality beautiful and captivating carpet bed displays will be developed
in high profile areas across Fife, and communities across the South West Fife area will be
encouraged and supported to go that ‘extra green mile’ for 2010.

Fife’s Children’s Book Festival: 4th – 25th September 2010
Lead Organisation: Fife Council Libraries & Museums
The approach of autumn is marked by the staging of the biggest ever Children’s Book
Festival in Fife, featuring appearances by bestselling children’s authors, related craft and
reading workshops and entrancing book, film, theatre and other entertainment events set
in libraries, theatres, public parks and community venues right across Fife. South West
Fife communities and schools will benefit from a range of events, sessions and author
visits. This popular mix of invited school audiences and family events is sure to be a hit
with children and families alike.

The Traditional Boat Festival: 11th September (Provisional Date)
Lead Organisation: North Queensferry Boat Club
North Queensferry will host this welcoming Festival dedicated to celebrating the majesty
and beauty of some of Scotland’s most beautiful traditional boats. With a programme of
complimentary harbour and community entertainment, hands on activities and fun, Fife’s
own Forth Bridges will welcome all to the enjoyment of learning about our own seafaring
history close up in this beautiful, traditional setting.

The Byre@ Programme: October – November 2010
Lead Organisation: The Byre Theatre Ltd
As the nights begin to draw in, the famous Byre Theatre of St Andrews moves out of its
normal home and into a host of small communities and venues across Fife’s areas. Suoth
West Fife communities will enjoy an inspiring and engaging programme of sometimes
quirky, always engaging theatre, music and performance events that will warm the hearts
of new audiences of all ages in places where a 5 star theatre venue is not normally within
easy reach.
