Chair in Philological Studies ‘East – West’ Center for the Education of Citizens ‘Poland – Israel’ Department of Philology, the University of Białystok Learned Association ‘Oikoumene’ kindly invite for The 5th International Conference JEWS OF EASTERN POLAND The Conference will take place at the Department of Philology, the University of Białystok, from 20 to 21 June 2016, and will be accompanied by The 9th Festival of Jewish Culture ‘ZACHOR – Colour and Sound’ (17 – 21 June) As usual, for the conference participants admission to all festival events is free. The 2016 conference will honour RABBI SAMUEL MOHYLEWER a distinguished representative of the Jewish community from Białystok. The conference presentations and discussions will focus predominantly on JUDAISM IN CENTRAL AND ESTERN EUROPE The organizers invite papers related to – Judaism in eastern parts of Poland, as well as in central and eastern Europe; – Renunciations of Judaism and returns to Judaism as elements of the life of European Jews; – Distinguished representatives of Jewish religion: their lives and achievements; – Representations of Judaism, synagogues and religious life in literature and visual arts; – Jewish literature and religious art; Jewish architecture; – Perception of the Jewish life in eastern Europe; – Relations between language and religion in Judaism; – Judaism as compared with other religions, nations and identities in eastern Europe; – History of Judaism; – Movements and sects in the development of Judaism in central and eastern Europe. We kindly invite you to deliver papers and take part in panel discussions. The equipment for audio-visual presentations will be provided by the organizers. * * * The conference fee includes accommodation and meals from 19 to 21 June 2016. The conference fee is 400 PLN [the bank account number is to be announced later]. The conference fee for the scholars from Białystok is 300 PLN. Each participant is guaranteed to receive of a copy the volume collecting papers from the 2015 edition of the conference. The proceedings of the 2016 edition are to be collected in the Scholarly Series ‘Colloquia Orientalia Bialostocensia’ [as the 5th volume of Jewish Studies], published by Książnica Podlaska Library and Chair in Philological Studies ‘East – West’, the University of Białystok. The deadline for submissions is 15 March 2016.
