Marine & Maritime Career Fair
The 2016 Marine & Maritime Career Fair will be on Saturday, February 27, 2016 in Annapolis, MD and is FREE
for students. It is targeted at Grades 6-12+ in order to promote learning about career pathways into Marine and
Maritime careers that span opportunities available through both college and technical trades. Widely promoted in
Maryland, it is also promoted for the Chesapeake Bay region and surrounding states. For more info, a video of
last year's event and to pre-register students, visit eycfoundation.org. Contact Pam Ray, Eastport Yacht Club
Foundation, for more information. She can be reached at: 703-244-0044.
Maryland Birds and Bird Habitats Field Research
The Maryland Ornithological Society and Washington College sponsor this summer program. The event will be
held at Washington College from June 26-July 1, 2016 and students will work with trained ornithologists. It is
open for students entering grades 7-12.
Program OverviewBirds, aside from being a fascinating part of the natural world, provide a critical insight into the quality of
different habitats in the environment. They are the best bioindicators of the quality of our environment and
are a major focus of research in every country on our planet.
There are a number of research projects where student involvement is essential. Using GIS technology to
map and simple field strategies, anyone can help collect data and further research. Students will work in the
field with scientists and other students learning how to identify birds by ear and by habitat, map breeding
areas and nest boxes with GPS and GIS technology, and initiate actual research projects.
During the week, participants will both work in the field and classroom with trained ornithologists and
researchers. They will both collect and learn to access the numerous available data sources.
Students will learn the basics of ornithology, learn how to keep a nature journal, use GIS and GPS, and see
how to access eBird to download and upload data.
Students need not have any birding experience, but should have a love of nature and the outdoors.

College Applications
Seniors, make sure you are paying attention to and keeping up with deadlines. Your college applications to fouryear colleges/universities should be submitted as soon as possible. If you need help, please make an appointment
with your guidance counselor. Please give those you ask to write your letters of recommendation about a week
before you need it.
Many of our seniors are getting acceptances for their colleges next fall. Make sure that you stop by
Guidance to report your good news along with the amount of scholarship monies you have been offered.
We need the scholarship information for any school that your child receives an acceptance, not just the
college they will choose to attend. We like to report the total amount our graduates receive during
graduation. Last year’s graduates earned over $10 million in scholarship offered collectively!
Scholarships
Scholarship deadlines are approaching. Please visit Ms. Whiting in our guidance office on a regular basis to get
any new applications that arrive. Do your parents a favor and apply- apply- apply. College is expensive.
Attached is the most current list of applications we have on file.
