An elderly woman drove her car through the smoke and pinned him between the front of her car and the back of Engine 2. She was driving 55 mph and the impact moved the 40,000 lb. engine 22 feet. His first surgery lasted 12 hrs. with 22 units of blood, but the trauma team was unable to stop the blood loss so both legs had to be amputated. Roger was in the hospital for 2 1/2 months. He had been an avid weight lifter for 10 years leading up to the accident. On the 1st day of Physical Therapy the therapist wrote on his chart; "Mr. Dakin is already stronger than we would have tried to make him so he was transferred to Health Strategies.
