Central Gippsland Health Service (CGHS) is
the major provider of health and residential
aged care services in the wellington Shire
with more than 70 acute beds: 180 high
and low care residential aged care beds,
as well as 15 independent living units. Acute
services are situated at Sale (incorporating
an Operating Suite, Emergency
Department, Critical Care Unit, Obstetrics,
Level 2 Nursery and Paediatric services)
with some acute beds located at Maffra
and Heyfield.
CGHS is an integrated health service
providing a wide range of primary health
and community support services; including
Home and Community Care (HACC)
throughout the Shire of wellington with
community centres at Maffra, Sale,
Heyfield, Rosedale and Loch Sport, and
residential services at Sale, Maffra and
Heyfield.
Approximately 900 staff fill the equivalent of
620 Full Time positions.
The Oncology Department is a discrete unit
within the health service that delivers both
inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy. It
has close liaisons with Gippsland Regional
Integrated Cancer Service (GRICS).

Decision making / delegation
This position is at operational level and will have input into planning and decision making processes as
part of the service team. The position reports to Nurse Unit Manager Oncology who holds a delegated
authority to the level of Department Head/Manager in accordance with “CGHS Instrument of
Delegation”. The position also liaises with the Gippsland Regional Integrated Cancer Services Manager.
The work context:
The Cancer Services Improvement Officer works in an environment that requires effective interaction with
a variety of internal and external stakeholders that include:
 NUM Oncology
 Oncology nursing Staff
 Senior medical staff
 GRICS
The purpose of the position:
The primary purpose of the position is to coordinate care for cancer patients and their families across
sectors and between providers in acute, primary, community and palliative care settings in the subregions of East Gippsland, West Gippsland, Wellington and South Gippsland/Bass Coast. To implement redesigned, sustainable systems and pathways for care coordination, within available resources and to
assist patients, families and carers to access the available range of cancer treatment and support
services as close to home as possible.
Under the guidance of the Gippsland Regional Integrated Cancer Services Manager, the Clinical
Director, the Executive Committee and the Regional Cancer Services Improvement Officer this position
will be integral to the establishment and coordination of integrated cancer services across Gippsland.
This will occur within the principles of care coordination, where patients/clients/residents have access to
a highly coordinated health care and community support system.
The key responsibilities of the role:

 Implement and manage projects/activities that will deliver improvements in cancer service
delivery and care coordination.
 Support the development and implementation of a Patient Held Record in local health
services.
 Facilitate improved cancer data collection.
 Implement and manage projects/activities that will deliver improvements in cancer service
delivery and multidisciplinary care.
 Provide education to the local workforce and community to achieve the recommendations
of care in the psychosocial guidelines for patients with cancer.
 Support, develop and implement a psychosocial screening and referral system.
 Implement the Patient management Frameworks as a quality tool in cancer care delivery.
 Submit monthly written reports to the GRICS manager/NUM Oncology.
