Criminal Justice
Law Enforcement
Seward County Community College/Area Technical School
Many law enforcement agencies in major citiies require a two-year or a four-year degree or for employment. The Associate Degrees in
Criminal Justice are designed to provide students with the basic knowledge and physical skills required for a career in law
enforcement or prepare students to transfer to a university to complete their course of study. Students will have the opportunity to
receive hands-on training and work with laptop computers, Firearms Training Simulator (FATS) and investigative test equipment
designed for officers to use in the field.
Career Opportunities
The career opportunities are continuing to grow each year. Changes in our society are creating new jobs
and a demand for additional law enforcement officers to fill these positions. Completion of the Associate in
Applied Science or Associate in Science degree will provide students a solid foundation necessary for
success in the following areas:
 Insurance
 Corrections
 Probation and Parole
 Police Department
 Highway Patrol
 Security
 Sheriff Department
 Private Investigation
 Federal Law Enforcement
Degree Options
Seward County Community College/Area Technical School offers a two year Associate of Science Degree
for students who want to transfer to a four year University and finish their education. We also offer a two
year Associate of Applied Science Degree in Law Enforcement. At the present time in the state of Kansas,
an individual can be eligible to become a law enforcement officer with a GED or high school education.
Some departments require some college and in other areas, a Bachelors degree is required. If a student
attends some college classes or obtains a degree, this will make the student more marketable for Law
Enforcement positions.
Advising
Your SCCC/ATS Criminal Justice department advisor will help you plan your course of study and will
outline the specific requirements for completion of an Associate of Science or an Associate of Applied
Science degree. Students should contact the Admissions Office to visit the campus and meet with an
advisor at the time of your visit.
Facilities
The SCCC/ATS Criminal Justice program has laptop computers equipped with crime scene software for
use in several criminal justice courses. The Firearms Training Simulator (FATS), which is available to all
criminal justice students for use in the classroom, is a simulator which projects various scenarios to the
screen and the student has several options to pick from. The student watches the scenarios and decides
whether or not to use deadly force. The scenarios are based on situations that law enforcement officers
might be subjected to.
At SCCC/ATS, you will be assigned an email address, if you don’t have one, and you will have access to
computer labs that are networked to all areas of the college and internet.
Clubs/Organizations
As a student majoring in Criminal Justice at SCCC/ATS, you are eligible to join Sigma Chi Chi. This club
is a sub-chapter of the American Criminal Justice Association/Lambda Alpha Epsilon National Grand
Chapter. This is an organization of students and professional practitioners dedicated to the improvement of
criminal justice through educational activities and the promotion of professionalism in law enforcement and
other criminal justice agencies. Members of Sigma Chi Chi participate in fundraisers, community service
projects, and regional and national competitions. The club utilizes guest speakers from various areas of the
criminal justice field. Members also have opportunities to visit correctional and law enforcement facilities.
