PURPOSE / RATIONALE: Round characters change in the story, causing the plot to develop and progress. Students need to track these changes as they affect the nature of the conflict. In story writing, round characters allows for the plot to be extended and developed. The teacher asks the students to give other characters they know of that went through a major change. 2. The teacher explains that such characters are round. 3. The teacher distributes an extract from “Drunkard of the River”. 4. Students are asked to read the extract and identify the character that is round. 5. The teacher asks students to share their answers and writes the different reasons on the board. 6. Students are asked to write a few sentences explaining why the character is round based on what was written on the board and discussed. 7. Students are places in groups of 2-3 and asked to do a Freeze Frame of the part of the story where the round character undergoes a change.
