Keenan1 Connor Keenan Mrs. Thomas English 9H 15 February 2011 Non Fiction Essay . Non fiction writing is realistic and true. The subject matter is about a person, a place, or a thing. Non fiction writing talks about events that actually happened, real places, and real people. Some non fiction examples I have read are: “The Sacred Grove of Oshogbo” by Jeffrey Tayler, “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou, “Advice to Youth” by Mark Twain, “Carry your Own Ski’s” by Lina Dolan, “The Ignored Lesson of Anne Frank” by Bruno Bettelheim, “Is Hunting Ethical?” by Ann Calsey, and “AT&T Losing iPhone Grip, Signals Start to Tough Year” by Reuters. “The Pact” is a work of non fiction because it really happened, and the people in the book really exist. “The Pact” is an inspiring and uplifting story of the journey and struggles of three young men that form a pact to become doctors. The young men grow up in rough parts of Newark, New Jersey where stabbings and gun wounds are the norm. These young men know that they must get out of this place, so one of the young men, George, convinces the other two to become doctors with him. They have a long and rough journey ahead of them. Through high school, the boys experience negative environments and poor living conditions, they even got themselves sent to juvenile detention centers. During a summer program to get ready for college, the boys learn that they are going to need to put forth more effort toward school. College is a very troubling experience where the boys learn that they must work hard to succeed. Their experiences in medical school are by far the most troubling. Sam faces self doubt, George was confronted with isolation, for the first time since high school, George is on his own. When everything was going against them, their race, their finances, their home life, they still pulled through and became doctors. All in all, I very much liked the novel “The Pact”. Sam, Rameck, and George’s story of friendship, and overcoming the odds is one that should be read everywhere. What I liked about “The Pact” was the colorful descriptions of their ways of life, it really makes you appreciate how much they had actually overcome. I would definitely recommend this book to people of all ages. Students can learn from this book, young adults can learn from this book, even parents are able to learn from this book. The lesson that can be learned is very universal and can be applied to almost anyone’s life. “The Pact” is an outstanding book, and I hope that is gets even more recognition.
