Term 4 – Week 4
Building strong learning partnerships for success
We are 4 weeks into this term with only 7
weeks left. This term is a very important time
for our Year 6 children as they are preparing to
leave us and move onto high school, and we
still need to organise Multicultural day,
Swimming lessons, Books in Homes, Tregear
Poly Day, Prefect Nominations, Movie Day,
Presentation Day, End of year Concert,
Debutante Ball and Year 6 Graduation + Yr6
Farewell; it is going to be super busy. Please
keep the Doonside Dates to stay on top of
everything.
Excursion Cut Off
It has come to our attention recently the
number of students trying to pay for excursions
after the cut off time. Please ensure you pay
for your child’s excursion before the due date
as money and permission notes will not be
accepted after this time. This will ensure
children are not upset and are not missing out
on excursions.
Interruption to classes
Dear Parents
If you have an appointment we request that
you provide your child with a note on the day
so the classroom teacher can have your child
prepared to leave. This will reduce disruptions
to lessons. Your child can then meet you at the
office. Thank you for your cooperation.
Mini Debutante Ball
If you have filled out an expression of interest
form, don’t forget to purchase your tickets from
the office.
Statewide Yr 6 High School Orientation Day
Thursday 3rd December is Year 6 High School
Orientation Day. This is statewide for every
child starting high school in a DOE school in
Friday, 30th October 2015
2016. Please contact your child’s intended high
school to find out what time your child needs to
arrive.

Term 4 Week 4
Pedestrian Safety
Children need assistance dealing with the
traffic environment until at least the age of 10
as they are not equipped physically or
developmentally to make the crucial decisions
to keep them safe. Like learning to drive a car,
children need practise and experience to walk
in the traffic environment.
Alongside the benefits of learning road safety,
it is great chance to spend time with your
family and good exercise!!
Children are vulnerable road users. Anywhere
where there is a potential for moving vehicles
is a potentially dangerous traffic situation for
children. This includes residential areas, carparks, at traffic lights, along
footpaths, pedestrian and other crossings,
driveways, quiet streets, and busy streets.
Although children may think they can handle
crossing a road by themselves, remember that
children:









are easily distracted and focus on only
one aspect of what is happening
are smaller and harder for drivers to see
are less predictable than other
pedestrians
cannot accurately judge the speed and
distance of moving vehicles
cannot accurately predict the direction
sounds are coming from
are unable to cope with sudden changes
in traffic conditions
do not understand abstract ideas - such
as road safety
are unable to identify safe places to
cross the road
tend to act inconsistently in and around
traffic

Are they often missing from school?
See your doctor about a HEALTH CARE PLAN
Next time you visit…
This will assist with health management for
your child and may address ATTENDANCE
CONCERNS at school and alleviate family
stress.
Domestic Violence
As we are all aware there has been a lot of
media at the moment regarding Domestic
Violence. If yourself or someone you know
needs help please call the
Domestic Violence Hotline
1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732)
Or for men visit NO TO VIOLENCE at
ntv.org.au
Many children below the age of 10 years do
not have the capability or judgment to handle
many pedestrian situations. Children need to
be accompanied and closely supervised by a
parent or adult carer to keep them safer.

Whooping cough information for schools
There is an outbreak of whooping cough
(pertussis) in NSW, mainly affecting schoolaged children.
Coughing spreads the infection to others
nearby. Whooping cough can spread to
anyone at home, including younger brothers
and sisters. Whooping cough can be especially
dangerous for babies.
Whooping cough starts like a cold and
progresses to bouts of coughing that can last
for many weeks. The infection can occur even
in fully-vaccinated children. Older children may
just have a cough that is persistent and may be
worse at night.
 Children with these symptoms
should see a doctor.

If your doctor diagnoses whooping
cough in your school-aged child,
please let the school know and keep
your child at home until they have
taken 5 days of antibiotics. Keep
coughing children away from babies.

Whooping cough vaccines give good
protection against infection but
immunity fades with time. Check that
all your children are up to date with
their vaccines, due at 6 weeks, 4
months, 6 months, 4 years and 12
years of age (offered to all Year 7
students through the NSW schoolbased vaccination program). A
booster is also recommended at 18
months of age.
A booster dose of vaccine is also
recommended for adults that are in contact
with young children, such as school staff and
parents. Pregnant women are recommended to
have a booster dose during each pregnancy
and this is funded by NSW Health. Those who
are new parents or carers of babies should
consult their general practitioner about
appropriate immunisation.
Your local public health unit can provide advice
about whooping cough on 1300 066 055 or
visit the NSW Health website.
