LTEL 102D U.S. Literary Canon: 1900-the present (Fall 2010) This course will examine major works and literary movements in U.S. literature spanning the twentieth century, with particular concern for the historical, social, and political conditions in which texts were written and received. The texts selected include examples from fiction, poetry, and drama and, taken together, reflect aspects of emergent concerns with issues of gender, class, and race in U.S. literature. Course Policies: Attendance: You are expected to attend lectures and section meetings consistently. If you miss more than two section meetings you will fail. Section instructors (a.k.a. “TAs”) will keep tabs on you to “encourage” lecture attendance. Discussion sections will meet eight times this quarter. There will be no section meetings the first full week of the semester; section meetings are cancelled the week of Thanksgiving as well. Lecture is cancelled the Wednesday immediately preceding Thanksgiving. Course Work: There will be two 5-6-page essays and one final exam (with objective questions, short answers, and two essay questions). At his or her discretion, your section instructor give reading quizzes at any given time. Essay #1: Due on Wednesday, October 22, 2010. Focus your argument on Chopin, Cather, or Faulkner. Essay #2: Due on Monday, November 22, 2010. Focus your argument on Wright, Valdez, or Kennedy. (You may also write about Ginsberg, but only in conjunction with another text). Papers should be revised, typed, proofread and stapled on the day indicated in the schedule. Requests for extension (maximum of two days) should be made in advance of the due date (generally by emailing your TA). All papers should be typed and thoroughly proofread. Papers should follow MLA format, using parenthetical citations and a Work(s) Cited page.
