Wei Eating less meat by Yixuan Wei English 289, Section 93 Ms. Nancy E. Hindle 9/6/2012 Wei Outline Thesis Statement: By eating less meat, human being can not only keep themselves away from adipose but also help the environmental balance because meat are much fatter than other food and need more natural resource to produce compare to vegetable. I. Just by eating too much meat, you can get a disease which can even kill yourself. Also, by the way you are getting fat because eating meat, you are putting the word to the end. (introduction, in essay will include thesis statement) II. As the world creating much more wealth than before, more and more people are getting too fat because they eat too much meat, so we should try to control our want for meat in order to get away from those diseases bring by obesity. A. Since 1970s, more and more people are eating meat as their daily food, which cause in 1990s a lot of people getting diabetes, hyperfine and so on. (Popkin, Adair, and Ng 3-21) 1. High percentage of working getting the same disease makes the society structure not as steady as before. 2. Once a lot of people die in that disease, the society would get into flurried feeling period and lose a large amount of human resource which is able to make effort for social development. Wei B. Especially in developing country, they eat much more than before. (Popkin, Adair, and Ng 3-21) 1. In developing country, not many people had enough money to buy meat as daily food 10 years ago, so when they have more money, they buy more meat even that is over their need. 2. For example in China, In my father’s generation, he didn’t get enough meat in childhood, so he was really fat when he was able to earn enough money buying meat. C. “An array of large-scale programmatic and policy measures are being explored in a few countries; however, few countries are engaged in serious efforts to prevent the serious dietary challenges being faced.” (Popkin, Adair, and Ng 3-21) 1. It is still not enough, even the society has paid much more attention to dealing with obesity than 20 years ago. 2. Human being need to understand that too fat is now a disease, which is able to end up of their life. III. Human should produce less meat in order to give back the land resource to forest, because we all need trees to transform carbon dioxide into oxygen. Wei A. “The forests in Turkey absorbed 7.99% of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, which was 312.31 Tg CO2 year-1 in 2005.” (TOLUNAY 265-279) 1. Once we need more land to produce food for those animal that we feed to eat, forest seems like the only apace we can change into farming place. 2. However, Forest has a crucial role on our environmental balance so we have to stop this kind of action, otherwise human would just kill themselves. B. “At the same time herds cause wide-scale land degradation, with about 20 percent of pastures considered as degraded through overgrazing, compaction and erosion.” (Andre 18-18) 1. Once we cut down the trees and use land to produce food for livestock, we got lost on the quality of our land because the natural balance has been broken. 2. Land is a limited resource in the earth which should not be over used like this. C. “Global meat production is projected to more than double from 229 million tonnes in 1999/2001 to 465 million tonnes in 2050, while milk output is set to climb from 580 to 1043 million tonnes.” (Rome ) 1. From above number we can image that more and more trees will be cut in order to give more space to produce meat. Wei 2. Now, I eat almost three piece of chicken a day. If I could eat one piece a day, that would world much different. IV. Livestock can produce meat as food for us, but they not only need vegetable as their food but also waste our natural source and make excretion. A. “The livestock sector accounts for 9 percent of CO2 deriving from human-related activities, but produces a much larger share of even more harmful greenhouse gases. It generates 65 percent of humanrelated nitrous oxide, which has 296 times the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of CO2. Most of this comes from manure.” (Rome ) 1. Livestock seem like a good way to increase wealth fast but in fact the environmental cost behind it is over what human being can take. B. “And it accounts for respectively 37 percent of all human-induced methane (23 times as warming as CO2), which is largely produced by the digestive system of ruminants, and 64 percent of ammonia, which contributes significantly to acid rain.” (Rome ) 1. Not only we would receive global warming but also the acid rain would come after it. 2. The balance of natural begin to be destroyed step by step. Wei C. “Livestock are estimated to be the main inland source of phosphorous and nitrogen contamination of the South China Sea, contributing to biodiversity loss in marine ecosystems.” (Rome ) 1. Just like a circle, we would destroyed almost everything in order: land, air, water; but we do have a chance to make it better by eating less. V. In sum, by eating less meat, we could save our health and the whole environment which we all live in. Wei Work Cited TOLUNAY, Doğanay.
