DATE: BLOCK: Friday, March 27, 2015 1 (AP Lit & Comp) WORK COLLECTED/CHECKED/DUE: 1. Class Participation #8 (10 points) 2. Daily Edits Set #8 (5 points) 3. Question of the Day sheet for the week of March 23, 2015 (25 points) CLASSWORK: 1. Because everyone is doing so well and we’ve been having great conversations about the play, the multiple-choice portion of the test will be on the TUESDAY we get back from break (and it will count on Q3). The essay will either be a take-home essay or it will be done in class on Wednesday or Thursday after we get back. 2. Question of the Day sheet for the week of March 23, 2015 (#58) List ONE of the second round of predictions 3. Daily Edits Set #8 , sentence #5 (#60) Pronoun-antecedent agreement: singular pronouns go with singular nouns, and plural pronouns go with plural nouns “Everyone,” “everybody,” “someone,” and “somebody” are ALL singular words “None of us are going to the party tonight.” “None” is a contraction for “Not one” “us” is NOT the subject of the sentence, as it is the object of the preposition “of.” Therefore, this sentence is WRONG. “None of us is going to the party tonight.” 4. Macbeth performances I.i (three witches: Rebecca, Mark, and Julia M) I.ii.1-78 (Emily as Duncan, Paige as Malcolm, Mr. Reiff as Captain, Danielle as Lennox, and Katie as Ross) I.iii.1-92 (First Witch, Second Witch, Third Witch, Mr. Reiff as Macbeth, and Meagan as Banquo) I.v.1-86 (Abbey as Lady Macbeth (soliloquy), Messenger, and Macbeth) I.vi (Duncan, Banquo, and Lady Macbeth): not performed I.vii.1-96 (Mr. Reiff as Macbeth and Abbey as Lady Macbeth II.iii.1-172 (DVD of the Porter Scene!) (Porter, Macduff, Macbeth, Lennox, Lady Macbeth, Banquo, Malcolm, and Donalbain) III.i.1-162 (Mr. Reiff as Macbeth, Abbey as Lady Macbeth, Meagan as Banquo, Jake S as First Murderer, and Jake W as Second Murderer III.ii.1-63 (Abbey as Lady Macbeth, Servant, Mr. Reiff as Macbeth) III.iii.1-33 (First Murderer, Second Murderer, Third Murderer, and Banquo) (not performed but viewed) Handout of Polanski version of III.iv.1-176 (#61) (Macbeth, Joe as First Murderer, Abbey as Lady Macbeth, and Jamila as Guest, Ross, Lennox, AND Lords) Motifs Meet with your GLAMIS partner for 20 minutes and identify as many motifs as you can from III.iv (NOTE: Line numbers are not exact, as they refer to line numbers from a different publication of Macbeth) In addition, examine III.iv.23-27: to what is Macbeth comparing himself (cabined, cribbed, confined, and bound). In other words, what is the metaphor? Appearances can be deceiving: 108-111 (the toast) Blood equals Guilt: 91-99 (people used to stay dead) and 168-170 Darkness Sleeplessness: 173 (you’re acting this way because you haven’t slept) Masculinity vs. Femininity Blood equals guilt: III.iv.168-170: Starred Quotation #15. This one is HUGE!! In a wonderful piece of imagery, Macbeth imagines himself in an ocean of blood. Imagine Mr. Reiff standing in the middle of the classroom and the classroom is filled with blood. Macbeth is saying that the beginning of this ordeal (battlefield, witches, Thane of Cawdor, murder of Duncan, ascension to king, and murder of Banquo) is as far away from him as his ultimate goal (which he’s going to find out from the witches when he goes to see them the next day). Ambition III.iv.164-168: Macbeth decides that he MUST speak with the witches and that they MUST tell him what’s going to happen to him In addition, examine III.iv.23-27: to what is Macbeth comparing himself (cabined, cribbed, confined, and bound). In other words, what is the metaphor? Good answers: baby (helpless), prisoner (trapped), slave (not in control, as FATE is pulling the strings) Macbeth is comparing himself to the bear being attacked by the dogs Morgan Druce S13 AP: “Much like the bear, Macbeth is entertainment for the witches.” Who are the dogs? Everyone who is a threat (Macduff, Fleance, Malcolm, Donalbain, Macbeth’s guilty conscience, and Lady Macbeth) III.v.1-36 (First Witch, Hecate) (discussed) III.v.15 Acheron is a river in hell This scene rhymes the whole time. However, Shakespeare used rhyme to indicate something important or to indicate the end of a scene. This whole scene is not important. What could that mean? Scholars believe that Shakespeare did NOT write this. Remember, his plays were published AFTER his death. Many different versions of his plays exist. This scene was probably added in order to make the play even more enjoyable (remember: the common people and the King LOVED witches!!!) III.vi.1-56 (Lennox, Lord) Lennox is being sarcastic! He doesn’t really believe this stuff! Banquo was out too late so he deserved to die. It’s like the people who say that a woman should have expected to be raped because she was out late alone or because she was wearing a sexy outfit Lennox is the first person to have suspicions of Macbeth Macduff went to England to see Malcolm and the King of England. Macduff is going to ask for help to take out Macbeth 5. Macbeth Act IV prompt Meet with your DUNSINANE partner and discuss only the second question. Images of blood from the play Report from bloody captain about Macbeth on the battlefield The bloody dagger that leads Macbeth to Duncan’s chambers Macbeth brings bloody daggers back with him All the blood in Neptune’s oceans Lady Macbeth’s hands Blood smeared on guards Macbeth kills the guards Murder of Banquo Blood on faces of murderers who killed Banquo Banquo’s ghost Macbeth in blood so deep that it would be the same distance to return as it would be to finish it “It is so real that we see, feel, and smell it on everything. And it sticks.” Agree: Blood is a character in the play (Reiff) Emphasizes something important (the severity of the situation) Kills cousin and friend (the GUILT sticks) Lessens the importance of murder (sickening!). Murder as the only solution Sickening to those AROUND Macbeth (like Lennox) Don’t WANT to believe that all of this comes from one person Macbeth and his guilt It’s in almost EVERY scene Abundance of blood (even on the hands) and the imagery Blood follows Macbeth and Lady Macbeth (Caitlin Ball) Disagree: DESENSITIZED!!! (Jeff Hosan with the three gold stars) Students who did NOT agree with this statement might have been DESENSITIZED by all of the horror films and video games on the market! Things like “Grand Theft Auto,” “Bully,” Hostel, and Saw. It’s not completely described More of a symbol or motif for guilt A lot of it happens off-stage In Shakespeare’s time, this was bloody Why do you think Shakespeare made this play so bloody? [not discussed; notes from previous sections of the course] Blood provokes interest (keeps people entertained) Supernatural (witches): blood makes it realistic Shakespeare wanted to make the statement that power can be deadly. To get to the top, people are going to be hurt along the way. Wanted to make it more of a show for King James Going for historical accuracy Wouldn’t be interesting if audience didn’t have to think about it. Blood represents meaning behind actions (guilt, betrayal, etc.) Used blood to show his disgust for politics; shaking his head in amazement To show the power of guilty conscience and sins 6. Macbeth: “The Lair Witch Scene” Students watched the scene once Images after Macbeth drinks from the chalice [includes notes from previous sections of the course] Mirrors (first held by Banquo): Fleance and Banquo’s descendants will STILL become king Sees himself: Beware Macduff (Thane of Fife) Banquo with ax in back: blood guilt OR Banquo’s out of the way! Macbeth’s head: Macduff’s plan for defeating Macbeth? Baby’s birth: turns into little boy, then a knight, then Macbeth? Signifies Macbeth’s rebirth? The birth could also mean that Lady Macbeth will have a child. After the baby is born, there is an old lady. One of the witches? A child in armor: maybe Macbeth? Malcolm and Donalbain (Duncan’s sons): Birnam Wood prediction. Well, THAT’S unlikely! 7. Act IV Starred Quotations (#52) (the second round of predictions) Beware Macduff No man born of woman shall harm Macbeth Macbeth will not be defeated until Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane 8. Macbeth performances IV.ii (discussed, not shown or performed) Lady Macduff, Ross, Son, Messenger, First Murderer IV.ii.11-13 Masculinity vs. Femininity: Lady Macduff questions Macduff’s manhood for having left her and their children alone. Even smallest bird fights back against owl when owl attacks bird’s nest! First Murderer: Macbeth sent murderers to take out Macduff and everyone at his castle. Macbeth’s AMBITION drives him to this! IV.iii (not performed, but shown) Malcolm, Macduff, Doctor, Ross Malcolm tests Macduff’s loyalty King of England offers 10,000 soldiers to fight against Macbeth Ross informs Macduff that Macduff’s wife and children were slaughtered Malcolm tells Macduff to use his anger in the fight against Macbeth Act V roles: Julian as Doctor Julia B as Gentlewoman Reiff as Lady Macbeth Joe as Menteith Gabrielle as Angus Steph as Caithness Kevin as Lennox Seul as Servant, Soldiers, Messenger Meagan as Seyton and Siward Mark as Young Siward Katie as Ross Jake Savitz as Macduff Paige as Malcolm Macbeth (Mr. Reiff) V.i.1-84 Doctor, Gentlewoman, Lady Macbeth IV.i.36-42: Blood equals guilt V.i: Sleeplessness V.i.24-25 Darkness V.i.53-55 Blood equals guilt Personalities switched V.ii.1-37 Menteith, Angus, Caithness, Lennox V.ii.23-25: The THIRD mention of Macbeth’s “loose-fitting robes”: he’s not FIT to be king! V.iii.1-76 Macbeth, Servant, Seyton, Doctor V.iii.46-48 Sleeplessness Macbeth is undecided about how to act V.iv.1-27 Malcolm, Menteith, Siward, Soldiers, Macduff Soldiers are marching against Macbeth…using large branches from the trees of Birnam Wood to camouflage their numbers!! V.v.1-59 Macbeth, Seyton, Messenger V.v.11-17: “I have almost forgot the taste of fears. The time has been, my senses would have cooled to hear a night-shriek, and my fell of hair would at a dismal treatise rouse and stir as life were in ‘t. I have supped full with horrors; Direness, familiar to my slaughterous thoughts cannot once start me.” V.v.22-31 “tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow” V.v.55: Darkness Nikki Finnochio S10 Block Three: “He’s become…DENSITIZED!” V.vi.1-11 Malcolm, Siward, Macduff V.vii.1-36 Macbeth, Young Siward, Macduff, Siward, Malcolm V.vii.1-4: Think about the movie version we’ve been watching. Prior to the murderers reporting the killing of Banquo, audience sees a bear trapped in a cage. Macbeth likens himself to that bear: trapped, yet dangerous. V.viii.1-88 Macbeth, Macduff, Malcolm, Siward, Ross Macduff is victorious Malcolm is crowned king and gives his “inauguration speech,” unifying the country HANDOUTS/NOTEBOOK UPDATE: 1.
