The subject of the paper will be chosen by the student, and approved by the instructor. The subject should relate to the content of this course. A list of sample topic ideas is attached. The development of the paper will follow generally accepted procedures, a summary of which is attached. Students should monitor the progress on the paper according to the following schedule. Grading will be based on 4 major areas: research, content, organization, and presentation. Some recommended sources of information and assistance include: ENR, St. Louis Construction News and Review, and Construction Industry Institute (CII). Publications 1. TOPIC : The student will finalize and submit a topic idea to the instructor in the form of a memo/email. The student should choose a subject about which he would like to gain considerable knowledge. The topic should be narrow rather than general in order to be reasonably covered within a 2000-word paper. 2. OVERVIEW: The student will submit a two-page overview of the general approach to the chosen topic, the anticipated reference sources to be consulted, and the basic framework or organization of the paper. 3. Final Version: The student will submit the completed paper in final form. The final submittal should include a title page, and be double-spaced. 4. Presentations: 20-minute power point presentations 5. PROCEDURES FOR WRITING A TERM PAPER 1. Choose a subject which interests you and about which you would like to know more. 2. Make a survey of the material available on your subject. Begin preparing a preliminary bibliography. 3. Do literature search and introductory reading. 4. Narrow your subject quickly Narrow so that you can focus your reading. 5. Begin taking notes when you have sufficiently narrowed the topic. 6. Begin to consider exactly what you will do with the subject. Remember that this is to be a report research paper, in which you read many sources and report the findings in your own words. Form an idea of how you will develop the subject. 7. Begin outlining your paper, following your initial hunches on how to organize the paper. You may prepare several scratch outlines before settling on a final outline. 8. Fill in the outline with additional investigation. 9. Finalize the outline and prepare a first draft of the paper. 3 SAMPLE TOPICS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
